Male Fertility and Lipid Metabolism

Male Fertility and Lipid Metabolism

Interest in lipid metabolism and polyunsaturated fatty acids in relation to sperm production has increased during the last decade. The motivation for the research described in this book originates from the discovery that sperm lipids contain extremely high proportions of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, thus establishing a link between lipid biochemistry and male fertility. Moreover, the fact that polyunsaturated fatty acids must, in some form, be supplied in the diet suggests a relationship between fertility and nutrition and raises the possibility of improving male fertility by dietary means. This book gives the reader an up-to-date view of several aspects of male fertility in relation to lipid and fatty acid metabolism. Researchers in the domain of male fertility, fatty acid metabolism, and antioxidants; medical personnel involved in the treatment of male infertility; fat technologists; students in nutrition, dietetics, biochemistry, pharmacy, and medicine; and everybody interested in the field will find this book useful.

Fat Digestion and Absorption

Provides researchers, medical personnel, nutrition students, and others with an up-to-date view of several aspects of fat digestion and absorption and describes potential and realized applications. Topics addressed include enzymatic aspects of fat digestion in the gastrointestinal tract; the uptake of fat digestion products in the brush border membrane, the intracellular transport, and incorporation of these substances in glycerolipids and chylomicrons, or their portal transport; methods used to evaluate fat absorption; the effects of the triglyceride structure on fat digestion and absorption; an overview of fat absorption and studies related to malabsorption due to pancreatic and bile acid deficiency states; the effects of simulated household heating on fat absorption; and the reduction of fat uptake, either by feeding unabsorbable food fats or by interference with the digestion process of usual food fats by pharmacological means. This book describes how man-made litter, primarily plastic, has spread into the remotest parts of the oceans and covers all aspects of this pollution problem from the impacts on wildlife and human health to socio-economic and political issues. Marine litter is a prime threat to marine wildlife, habitats and food webs worldwide. The book illustrates how advanced technologies from deep-sea research, microbiology and mathematic modelling as well as classic beach litter counts by volunteers contributed to the broad awareness of marine litter as a problem of global significance. The authors summarise more than five decades of marine litter research, which receives growing attention after the rece...
