This volume examines religiosity on university campuses in Sub-Saharan Africa. Rights and Responsibilities in Rural South Africa examines the gendered and generational conflicts surrounding social change in South Africa's rural Eastern Cape roughly twenty years after the end of Apartheid. In post-Apartheid South Africa, rights-based public discourse and state practices promote liberal, autonomous, and egalitarian notions of personhood, yet widespread unemployment and poverty demand that people rely closely on one another and forge relationships that disrupt the gendered and generational hierarchies framed as traditional and culturally authentic. Kathleen Rice examines the ways these tensions and restructurings lead to uncertainties about how South Africans should live together in their daily lives, with particular implications for understanding and responding to widespread gendered and sexual conflict and violence. Focusing particularly on the women of the village of Mhlambini, Rights and Responsibilities in Rural South Africa offers compelling portraits of how they experience and navigate widespread social and economic change and presents their experiences as a way of understanding how people navigate the moral ambiguities of contemporary South African life.
Migrant Spirituality
Migrant Spirituality makes visible the migration stories of African-born migrants to the USA, analyzes their experiences, and appreciates them as a source for theological reflection. The correlation of these narratives with John of the Cross' narrative of The Dark Night reveals that the dynamic between the concepts of vulnerability, spiritual humility, and God's transformative agency is central to understanding the spiritual dimension of the process of transformation in both narratives. Dorris van Gaal studied theology at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. She works in religious education and teaches at Loyola and Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore, MD. Her research interests are in Migration Theology, Spirituality, and World Christianity.
Knowledge Production in and on Africa
The book presents a broad and multi-dimensional perspective on the topic of knowledge production in and of Africa and seeks changing its post-imperial pattern. This endeavour reflects the concern that in our globalised world, Africa is misrepresented twice: by the ways knowledge about it is selected by gatekeepers of knowledge, and by deliberate suppression of knowledge on Africa. The contributions to this volume address diverse aspects of knowledge production: they examine the existing knowledge-producing frontiers in Africa; they challenge methodological and theoretical universalisms in social science scholarship on the African continent; they look into the interface between the indigenous and modern knowledge systems and the role of African epistemologies and intellectuals in the production of knowledge.
