Stephen Procter writes from Columbia [Virginia] to his brother, William Procter, Jr., S.W. Corner of 9th & Lombard Sts. in Philadelphia, 7 November 1849. Before answering his brother’s two or three letters, he complains, “I have only succeeded in deciphering portions of the past as owing to some rough usage on the road the case of Ext [extract of] Cannabis saturated the greater portion of it rendering the writing illegible, so if I fail to notice any portion of it thee will know to what to attribute it.” He continues by congratulating his brother on his new marriage and noticing that he (William) shall content himself as an “old Bachelor.” William describes his business affairs of ...
