One highly distinctive ancient Egyptian product is the hippopotamus tusk section, incised with series of divine forms to protect mother and child. Here the "birth tusks" are explored in five movements: linear description of Petrie Museum examples; contexts from pre-2000 excavations; corpus of pre-1973 acquisitions; comparison with late Middle Kingdom iconography, and then with material of other periods. Closing reflections on wider research horizons address the problems posed by the narrow chronological and social distribution of an object type.

Egyptian Literature 1800 BC

This study presents transliterations and English translations of surviving Middle Kingdom literary compositions, three of which survive almost in entirety: the `Exile of Sanehat', the `Shipwrecked Official' and the `Tales of Wonder at the Court of King Khufu'. Quirke introduces each type of text, such as laments and teachings, and the collection as a whole begins with a discussion of the significance of 1800 BC in the development of Egyptian writing and literacy and the nature of Middle Kingdom literature.

The literature that flourished for millennia met its end under the combined pressures of Greek-speaking government, Roman occupation, and conversion to Christianity.

It is illustrated with colour photographs for the first time. It is a perfect reference for beginners and scholars alike. The first four chapters of this book are divided by period, covering 3000 years of history from the dawn of Egyptian writing to the use of royal names under the Roman emperors in Egypt. With the help of ancient hieroglyphic texts and modern research, they give an indepth but accessible history of Ancient Egyptian royalty and society. The final chapter provides an extensive list of royal names and displays the principal cartouches for all the major kings of Ancient Egypt as well as some lesser-known but equally intriguing pharaohs. It also details the key events and characteristics of each reign.

Ancient Egypt Transformed

The Middle Kingdom (ca. 2030–1650 B.C.) was a transformational period in ancient Egypt, during which older artistic conventions, cultural principles, religious beliefs, and political systems were revived and reimagined. Ancient Egypt Transformed presents a comprehensive picture of the art of the Middle Kingdom, arguably the least known of Egypt’s three kingdoms and yet one that saw the creation of powerful, compelling works rendered with great subtlety and sensitivity. The book brings together nearly 300 diverse works— including sculpture, relief decoration, stelae, jewelry, coffins, funerary objects, and personal possessions from the world’s leading collections of Egyptian art. Did the ancient Egyptians believe in many gods, or was it one god in many guises? The answer lies in the special relationship between the sun god Ra and the king, in his central title "Son of Ra". Stephen Quirke draws together recent advances in our understanding of the cult of Ra, from the third millennium B.C. to the Roman conquest of Egypt and the rise of Christianity. He explores the Egyptian sources for the character of Ra, his pivotal role in creation, and the way in which the Egyptians expressed the world as physical matter unfurling from the sun. Through select inscriptions and manuscripts the reader enters the closed world of the king as he carried out his principal function, to mai...

Mysterious Lands

Mysterious Lands covers two kinds of encounters. First, encounters which actually occurred between Egypt and specific foreign lands, and second, those the Egyptians created by inventing imaginary lands. Some of the actual foreign lands are mysterious, in that we know of them only through Egyptian sources, both written and pictorial, and the actual locations of such lands remain unknown. These encounters led to reciprocal influences of varying intensity. The Egyptians also created imaginary lands (pseudo-geographic entities with distinctive inhabitants and cultures) in order to meet religious, intellectual and emotional needs. Scholars disagree, sometimes vehemently, about the locations and cultures of some important but geographically disputed actual lands. As for imaginary lands, they continually need to be re-explored as our understanding of Egyptian religion and literature deepens. Mysterious Lands provides a clear account of this subject and will be a stimulating read for scholars, students or the interested public.
