Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces guides naval architects from the first principles of the physics of control surface operation, to the use of experimental and empirical data and applied computational fluid dynamic modelling of rudders and control surfaces. The empirical and theoretical methods applied to control surface design are described in depth and their use explained through application to particular cases. The design procedures are complemented with a number of worked practical examples of rudder and control surface design.• The only text dedicated to marine control surface design• Provides experimental, theoretical and applied design information valuable for practising engineers, designers and students• Accompanied by an online extensive experimental database together with software for theoreticalpredictions and design development
Written by experts in the ship design field, this book provides a comprehensive approach to evaluating ship resistance and propulsion.
The course keeping and manoeuvring requirements for a ship are governed by international maritime law. In assessing and predicting the course keeping and manoeuvring capabilities of the ship, knowledge is required of the rudder forces necessary to keep a course or facilitate a manoeuvre. The second edition of Marine Rudders, Hydrofoils and Control Surfaces includes up-to-date data and rudder design techniques that enable the rudder forces to be estimated, together with any interactions due to the hull and propeller. The new edition describes the design and application of hydrofoils including shape adaptive design, and their applications including hydrofoil craft, yachts, and kite surfing hyd...
This updated edition provides a modern scientific approach to evaluating ship resistance and propulsion for a range of ship types.
This volume collects the edited and reviewed contributions presented in the 5th iTi Conference in Bertinoro covering fundamental aspects in turbulent flows. In the spirit of the iTi initiative, the volume is produced after the conference so that the authors had the possibility to incorporate comments and discussions raised during the meeting. Turbulence presents a large number of aspects and problems, which are still unsolved and which challenge research communities in engineering and physical sciences both in basic and applied research. The book presents recent advances in theory related to new statistical approaches, effect of non-linearities and presence of symmetries. This edition presen...
Aimed at teachers and students new to the subject, Studying Horror Cinema is a comprehensive survey of the genre from silent cinema to its twenty-first century resurgence. Structured as a series of thirteen case studies of easily accessible films, it covers the historical, production, and cultural context of each film, together with detailed textual analysis of key sequences. Sitting alongside such acknowledged classics as Psycho and Rosemary’s Baby are analyses of influential non-English language films as Kwaidan, Bay of Blood, and Let the Right One In. The author concludes with a chapter on 2017’s blockbuster It, the most financially successful horror film of all time, making Studying Horror Cinema the most up-to-date overview of the genre available.
In 1974, a scientific conference covering marine automation group and large vessels issues was organized under the patronage of the Technical Naval Studies Centre (CETENA) and the Italian National Research Council (CNR). A later collaboration with the Marine Technical Association (ATENA) led to the renaming of the conference as NAV, extending the topics covered to the technical field previously covered by ATENA national conferences. The NAV conference is now held every 3 years, and attracts specialists from all over the world. This book presents the proceedings of NAV 2018, held in Trieste, Italy, in June 2018. The book contains 70 scientific papers, 35 technical papers and 16 reviews, and subjects covered include: comfort on board; conceptual and practical ship design; deep sea mining and marine robotics; protection of the environment; renewable marine energy; design and engineering of offshore vessels; digitalization, unmanned vehicles and cyber security; yacht and pleasure craft design and inland waterway vessels. With its comprehensive coverage of scientific and technical maritime issues, the book will be of interest to all those involved in this important industry.
