Organisation and Complexity

Organisation and Complexity

Students of organisation have used complexity theory in many different ways and for many different reasons. What characterises the writings of most 'management thinkers', however, is that the authors are primarily concerned with the question of "how to make this complexity thing work for us?" This study takes a rather different approach. Ideas and concepts of the science of complexity are borrowed to develop the idea that organisations live lives of their own - an idea that is very much at odds with the dominant view that understands organisations as tools that we use to realise certain goals. To illustrate matters, the book discusses the developments of the organisation of Vitesse, a mediocre Dutch professional football club that according to its president needed to be transformed into a major player in the family entertainment industry.

Green Inside Activism for Sustainable Development

This book considers how public sector institutions can be transformed to better support sustainable development by exploring the concept of green inside activism and its importance for institutional change. The phenomenon of inside activism has been shown to be crucial for green policy change and this book focuses on public officials as green inside activists, committed to green values and engaged in social movement, acting strategically from inside public administration to change public policy and institutions in line with such value commitment. The book theorizes how green inside activism can contribute to a more sustainable development through institutional change. This theorizing builds on and relates to highly relevant theoretical arguments in the existing literature. The authors also consider the legitimacy of inside activism and how it can be reconciled with democratic ideals. This innovative work will appeal to students and scholars of public policy, political science and environmental politics.

Rachel Carson

Karen F. Stein University of Rhode Island, Kingston, USA Rachel Carson is the twentieth century’s most significant environmentalist. Her books about the sea blend science and poetry as they invite readers to share her celebration of the ocean’s wonders. Silent Spring, her graphic and compelling exposé of the damage caused by the widespread aerial spraying of persistent organic pesticides such as DDT, opened our eyes to the interconnectedness of all living beings and the ecological systems we inhabit. Carson’s work challenges our belief that science and technology can control the natural world, asks us to recognize our place in the world around us, and inspires us to treat the earth re...
