The loss of my mother was all I could think about as I sat on a limb in the cherry tree which towered over the hog lot. But when I woke up the next morning in my own bunk with the clean white sheets and my very own flashlight, surrounded by other boys my age, I knew I was in for an amazing life. We dressed and went down to breakfast and what a spread! It was made complete by eating in a large room with 35 other boys and girls and to top that off, we had peach preserves and homemade butter on hot biscuits. What a life for a five-year-old. We kids played long hours in the hills of Beattyville, KY. Christmas was packed with gifts and food given to us from Taylor Tire in Lexington. They took us ...

Deadly Deceptions

The year is 1987 and the Cold War is still ranging strong. Steve Darwood is a US Army counterintelligence agent in South Korea, working in Tongduchon, a small city close to the North Korean border, located very near the demilitarized zone, when he stumbles across a black-marketing operation that appears to be blackmailing soldiers for various types of information. Investigating further, he begins to uncover a network of criminals who appear to be linked to numerous military personnel. As Darwood continues to investigate, he begins to come against resistance from his own chain of command and then quickly unravels connections to higher ranking individuals in his own command structure. In very little time, Darwood finds himself alone, working against many of his own people, relying on his extensive network of sources, connections and allies. His investigation leads him through the heirarchy of his own military command in South Korea, and slowly he begins to realize that the network might go even higher, pushing him into a situation where he must challenge his own people, who hold the reins of his job, his livelihood and even his life.

The Decade in Tory

In 2020 the United Kingdom reached a bewildering milestone: ten successive years of Conservative rule. In that decade there were three prime ministers, each in turn described as the worst leader we ever had; ministerial resignations by the hundred; and an unrelenting stream of ineffectual, divisive bum-slurry oozing from 10 Downing Street. The Decade in Tory is an inglorious, rollicking and entirely true account of ten years of demonstrable lies, relentless incompetence, epic waste, serial corruption, official police investigations, anti-democratic practices, abuse of power, dereliction of duty and hundreds of thousands of avoidable deaths. With his signature scathing wit, Russell Jones breaks down the government’s interminable failures year by year, covering everything from David Cameron’s pledge to tackle inequality – which reduced UK life expectancy for the first time since 1841 – through the bewildering storm of lies and betrayals that led to Brexit, devastating education cuts, serial mismanagement of the NHS and Boris Johnson’s calamitous response to the Covid-19 pandemic. It will leave you gasping and wondering: can things possibly get any worse?
