Terminology

This volume brings together a selection of M. Teresa Cabré’s articles on terminology published after 1999 in journals of diverse nature and scope, many of which are difficult to access; articles in languages other than English are here provided in English translation. As a whole, these articles aim to represent the author’s groundbreaking work on terminology, both from a theoretical as from a methodological and applied point of view. Part I includes texts on three fundamental aspects of terminology as a field of knowledge: Firstly, general articles on the rethinking of proposals made by other authors and on the bases for the formulation of the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT). Secondly, articles that deal with the rethinking of the framework of this subject, with emphasis on specialised languages and communication. And thirdly, on the object of study: the terminological unit. Part II includes articles on methodology, international standards, and teaching terminology, and texts that deal with the intersection of terminology with other fields: Documentation, Translation, Neology, and Language Policy.

Unraveling the Family History of Jesus

Unraveling the Family History of Jesus approaches Jesus as an historical figure and sheds light on the details of the settings, the circumstances, and the context in which His family lived. Steven Donald Norris—drawing upon a wide array of sources—brings to this work an historian’s sensibility of the broad sweep of events and a genealogist’s eye for capturing the fine nuances that make a family’s own story unique. Typical theological treatments of Jesus tend to regard Him as the Messiah because the New Testament identifies Him as a “son of David.” Unraveling the Family History of Jesus digs into the background and lineage of Jesus and, by uncovering the setting in life—Sitz i...

For many years, I have been wondering whether the biblical patriarchs from Noah down to Abraham could be identified in historic sources outside the Bible. After many years of research, I finally unlocked the key and determined that, in fact, all of the Biblical patriarchs were real historic figures in ancient Sumerian and Assyrian documents. As has been shown to be the case with many historic figures from that time, the names given to these people in the ancient Sumerian and Assyrian records differ from those names in the Bible. However, the description of their act makes it possible to identify them in these ancient non-biblical records. Once that process began, I was able to flesh out the ...

Helsinki Travel Guide

Helsinki is the capital of Finland. Founded in 1550, the "Daughter of the Baltic" has been the Finnish capital since 1812, when it was rebuilt by the tsars of Russia along the lines of a miniature St. Petersburg, a role it has played in many a Cold War movie. Today, Helsinki pulls off the trick of being something of an international metropolis while still retaining a small-town feel. The best time to visit is in summer, when Finns peel off their overcoats and flock to outdoor bars and cafes to enjoy the sunshine. The city of Helsinki forms the core of Finland's largest urban area, known in Finnish as the "capital area" (paakaupunkiseutu). Helsinki is bordered by the Gulf of Finland to the so...

"What's the difference between a wooden flute and a stick in the mud? The stick in the mud is full of itself. The flute has been emptied of itself so that it can make beautiful music." The 40 days of Lent offer pilgrims a chance to journey slowly and intentionally toward the cross of Jesus. This book serves as a trail guide. Weaving personal stories with reflections on scripture and original photography, Norris invites readers to join him on a personal journey through the season of Lent. Though the process of emptying be painful, Norris serves as a trustworthy guide to call attention to the music of God that rises within each heart and resonates with all creation.
