Pragmatic Markers and Pragmaticalization
In this paper, we investigate the evolution from imperatives to discourse markers in Romance, with a corpus-based approach. We focus on the case of items coming from verbs meaning 'to look', in a semasiological perspective: Spanish and Catalan mira, Portuguese olha, Italian guarda, French regarde, Romanian uite. We show that they all share many uses, among which turn-taking, introduction of reported speech, hesitation phenomenon, topic-shifting and modalization, except for French regarde. We then establish (against Waltereit, 2002) that the development of these uses is the result of a process
A Pragmatic Approach to Fluency and Disfluency in Learner Language
This monograph presents analyses of filled and unfilled pauses, cut-offs, repair, discourse markers and other phenomena often referred to as disfluencies in the context of advanced language learners' PowerPoint presentations. It adopts a multimodal perspective to demonstrate the functions of these elements in interaction. Paired with gaze shifts, pointing gestures and posture shifts, they act as facilitators of joint visual orientation, mutual understanding, and accountable actions. Therefore, this volume suggests the name cofluency to reflect their potential functionality. Cofluencies are essential elements of multimodal chunks and multimodal patterns, and these are building blocks of a multimodal turn-taking mechanism for presentations. These concepts are illustrated and discussed based on excerpts from naturally occurring classroom data.

Mediale Welten sind Konstruktionen, die zum einen Auskunft über Perspektiven auf die Welt geben. Zum anderen sind sie kulturelle und historische Speichermedien für Ideologien, Anthropologien sowie Denk- und Handlungslogiken. Mediale Welten geben damit ein implizites kulturelles Selbstverständnis wieder, das eine Kultur von sich oder anderen Kulturen präsentiert. Die Tagung fokussiert aus verschiedensten fachspezifischen Blickwinkeln (literatur- und medienwissenschaftlichen, sprachwissenschaftlichen, fachdidaktischen usw.) und methodischen Positionen heraus auf Konstruktionen, die das Selbst- und Fremdverständnis Österreichs transportieren. Erkennbar werden sollen wesentliche soziale, politische und kulturelle Kräfte, die in einem (möglichst) weiten historischen Rahmen zu reflektieren sind. Es geht um die Entdeckung und Erforschung von offenen und versteckten Zusammenhängen, Entwicklungen, Verbindungslinien im Ästhetischen wie im Gesellschaftlichen.
Pragmatik multimodal
Sowohl Gespräche als auch Texte sind keinesfalls monomodale Kommunikationsanlässe und -angebote, sondern werden in Gestalt multimodaler Praktiken und Artefakte wahrnehmbar. Neben Sprache tragen Ausdrucksmodalitäten wie Gestik, Mimik, Körperhaltung und -bewegung, Stimme, also ganz grundsätzlich Körperlichkeit sowie Schriftbildlichkeit, Bilder, Emojis und mehr wesentlich zur Bedeutungsentfaltung im Kontext bei. Dieser Band nimmt sich der Bestimmung des Verhältnisses von Pragmatik- und Multimodalitätsforschung sowie einer multimodalen Pragmatik an. Die Zusammenführung von Studien zur multimodalen Pragmatik gibt einen Überblick über aktuelle und innovative Forschungsarbeiten, die sich aus einer pragmatischen Perspektive für multimodale Phänomene interessieren.
Manual of Romance Word Classes
Word classes are linguistic categories serving as basis in the description of the vocabulary and grammar of natural languages. While important publications are regularly devoted to their definition, identification, and classification, in the field of Romance linguistics we lack a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the current research. This Manual offers an updated and detailed discussion of all relevant aspects related to word classes in the Romance languages. In the first part, word classes are discussed from both a theoretical and historical point of view. The second part of the volume takes as its point of departure single word classes, described transversally in all the main Romance languages, while the third observes the relevant word classes from the point of view of specific Romance(-based) varieties. The fourth part explores Romance word classes at the interface of grammar and other fields of research. The Manual is intended as a reference work for all scholars and students interested in the description of both the standard, major Romance languages and the smaller, lesser described Romance(-based) varieties.
Tag Questions in Conversation
This monograph deals with variable tag questions. These are utterances with a variable interrogative tag, like It's peculiar writing, isn't it, and the semi-variable tag innit, such as Nice, innit. The aim is to provide a corpus-based, comprehensive semantic-pragmatic typology of British English tag questions. Compared to existing descriptions, the proposed typology is novel in three ways. Firstly, whereas almost all existing typologies are single-layered classifications, the functions of tag questions are categorized into two parallel dimensions of interpersonal meaning: the speech function and the stance layer. Secondly, semantic generalizations are proposed for clusters of grammatical, intonational and conversational properties. Thirdly, the bottom-up description is based on a sizeable amount of authentic, spontaneous conversations, which are analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Die Konstruktionsgrammatik gehört als theoretisches Paradigma mittlerweile auch in der Romanistik zum "state of the art". Doch stellt die Beschreibung vieler sprachlicher Phänomene auch die Konstruktionsgrammatik in der Praxis immer wieder vor Probleme. Vor allem die Umfelder des Sprechens geraten dabei in den Fokus. Dies gilt einerseits für die Berücksichtigung des Kontextes sprachlicher Ausdrücke in Theorie und Praxis. Andererseits stellt die Beschreibung kommunikativer Gattungen (oder "speech genres") im Sinne von Konstruktionen die Theorie vor neue Herausforderungen.
