Analyses of early modern Latin American literature have often portrayed it either as a continuation of the Iberian tradition, or as a reaction against Spanish imperialism. However, such overgeneralisations cannot account for the complex corpus of writing produced in the 'New World'. This is particularly true for the study of Gongorism, the new style developed by the Spanish author Luis de Góngora (1561-1627), which transformed Baroque poetics on both sides of the Atlantic. In this monograph, Luis Castellví Laukamp examines Góngora's impact on the visual and artistic imagination of two major Spanish American authors: Hernando Domínguez Camargo (1606-1659) and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695). Its implications extend beyond the Hispanic world to inform broader discussions about poetic influence, transmission of culture, and the relationship between art and poetry. Luis Castellví Laukamp completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge and is now a Lecturer in Spanish Cultural Studies at the University of Manchester.

The philosopher María Zambrano (1904-1991) is one of the foremost Spanish intellectuals of the twentieth century. A disciple of Ortega y Gasset, she taught at the University of Madrid in the 1930s and joined the Republican diaspora in exile, living in México, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Paris, Rome and Geneva till her return to Spain in 1984. A heterodox philosopher who conceived her role as that of an agent for ethical change, she sought to reconcile philosophy and poetry, and wrote not only essays on philosophy, but also plays, poetry, literary and art reviews, and a memoir. After the relative obscurity of her life in exile, her genius began to be recognized in the decade before her death, but she remains little known outside the Spanish-speaking world. These essays explore her legacy, offering new critical insights which draw on literature, aesthetics, gender studies, psychoanalysis, political theory and the visual arts. The editors teach modern Spanish literature at the University of Oxford, where Xon de Ros is a Tutorial Fellow at Lady Margaret Hall and Somerville College, and Daniela Omlor is a Tutorial Fellow at Lincoln College and a Lecturer at Jesus College.
Galician literature has historically played an integral role in the consolidation of Galician identity. Yet female novelists writing in Galician have only managed to achieve visibility in the Galician cultural sphere as recently as the turn of the twenty-first century; their contemporaries who opt to write in Spanish, moreover, are generally overlooked. This foundational study of contemporary narrative by Galician women in both languages examines the work of writers with disparate and often conflicting political and linguistic ideologies: Teresa Moure (b. 1969), Luisa Castro (b. 1966) and Marta Rivera de la Cruz (b. 1970). Catherine Barbour argues that the diverse manifestations of Galician identity in their novels, which defy institutional parameters in terms of language, politics and gender, suggest the need for a more porous understanding of Galician literature and identity that reflects the plurality of the Galician experience.
