STUDIOS Architecture

STUDIOS Architecture has many years of experience in making communities for corporations. In the early years, much of STUDIOS' work was concerned with the design of corporate campuses. The firm's aim was to humanise the workplace and provide a face to these 'little villages' it designed. STUDIOS' architectural language is now more varied to fit a diverse practice where the boundaries between work, culture, technology and society have been blurred; yet is grounded in a sense of humanity. Featured projects in this publication includea selection of the firm's corporate works as well as civic and institutional buildings.

Founded in 1985, and with offices in San Francisco, New York City, London, and Paris, Studios Architecture defies easy categorization. Its structure enables it to operate in spheres that rarely overlap within a single design firm. Studios thereby offers an extraordinarily wide range of services and solutions, combining the capabilities of a much larger firm with the experimental approach of a small design house.

Studio Lives

By examining the studios and studio-houses used by British artists between 1900 and 1940, this book reveals the ways in which artists used architecture - occupying and adapting Victorian studios and commissioning new ones. In doing so, it shows them coming to terms with the past, and inventing different modes of being modern, collaborating with architects and influencing the modernist style. In its scrutiny of the physical surroundings of artistic life during this period, the book sheds insight into how the studio environment articulated personal values, artistic affinities and professional aspirations. Not only does it consider the studio in terms of architectural design, but also in the light of the artist's work and life in the studio, and the market for contemporary art. By showing how artists navigated the volatile market for contemporary art during a troubled time, the book provides a new perspective on British art.

Studios Before the System

By 1915, Hollywood had become the epicenter of American filmmaking, with studio "dream factories" structuring its vast production. Filmmakers designed Hollywood studios with a distinct artistic and industrial mission in mind, which in turn influenced the form, content, and business of the films that were made and the impressions of the people who viewed them. The first book to retell the history of film studio architecture, Studios Before the System expands the social and cultural footprint of cinema's virtual worlds and their contribution to wider developments in global technology and urban modernism. Focusing on six significant early film corporations in the United States and France—the ...

RA The Book Vol 1

RA:The Book - The Recording Architecture Book of Studio Design was first published as a single, hardcover volume in 2011 and which has sold in over fifty countries to critical acclaim. A necessarily large format dictated by the detailed drawings it contained, RA:The Book was unavoidably heavy and costly to produce and ship. This iBook version is the first of three stand alone volumes which will hopefully make this essential guide to recording studio design more accessible. It includes a new introduction with previously unavailable photographs. The following description is for the original hardcover: Established by Roger D'Arcy and Hugh Flynn on April 1st 1987 Recording Architecture has risen...
