Le chant de l'arabesque
Deux constats appliqués à l'œuvre de Claude Simon sont au fondement de cette étude. En premier lieu, il convient de donner toute sa force à la conception simonienne de l'écriture comme fabrication : en second lieu, de mesurer l'ampleur des échos tissés de livre en livre et qui érigent lentement le " portrait d'une mémoire ". Embrassant l'ensemble des romans simoniens, nous nous proposons d'analyser les enjeux de ces retours, aux manifestations protéiformes. Intimement liée à la poétique romanesque, la répétition ne l'est pas moins de l'imaginaire ; jamais reprise stricte à l'identique, elle implique différence et variation. Se donnent alors à voir nombre de tensions constitutives qui travaillent l'ensemble scriptural, de la phrase à l'œuvre entière. Dès lors, si la syntaxe tout autant que la structure tendent à la circularité, ce retour partait que dessine le cercle est bientôt compliqué : il se tord, se distend, se déploie. Nous voulons suivre cette arabesque et nous mettre à l'écoute de son chant.
Essays on Music and the Spoken Word and on Surveying the Field
The nine interdisciplinary essays in this volume were presented in 2003 in Berlin at the Fourth International Conference on Word and Music Studies, which was sponsored by The International Association for Word and Music Studies (WMA). The nine articles in this volume cover two areas: "Surveying the Field" and "Music and the Spoken Word". Topics include postmodernism, philosophy, German literary modernism, opera, film, the Lied, radio plays, and "verbal counterpoint". They cover the works of such philosophers, critics, literary figures, and composers as Argento, Beckett, Deleuze, Guattari, Feldman, Glenn Gould, Nietzsche, Schubert, Strauss, Wagner, and Wolfram. Three films are discussed: Casablanca, The Fisher King, and Thirty Two Short Films About Glenn Gould.
Finding the Plot
“Plot”, writes Peter Brooks, “is so basic to our very experience of reading, and indeed to our articulation of experience in general, that criticism has often passed it over in silence…” (Reading for the Plot, xi). Finding the Plot both explores and helps to redress this critical neglect. The book brings together an international group of scholars to address the nature, effects and specific pleasures of consuming stories. If the central focus is on France and popular literary fiction, the book’s scope – like contemporary fiction itself – observes no national frontiers, and extends across a variety of media. The book addresses both the empirical question of which genres and types of text have been and are most “popular”, and the theoretical questions of how plots work, what pleasures they offer to readers, and why it matters that the plot should not be lost.
Deuil et littérature
La tâche du deuil ? « Maintenir vivant comme objet perdu » celui ou celle que nous avons perdu. C'est-à-dire : ne pas fantasmer son improbable survie, sans céder non plus à l'effacement de l'oubli, cette deuxième mort symbolique, presque plus terrible que la première réelle. Est-ce cela que la littérature nous permet, ou plus modestement nous promet ? Une reconnaissance et une conversion de la perte, qui composerait avec la dimension mélancolique en y échappant ? L'objet de ce livre est plutôt de laisser résonner cette question, d'en suivre le trajet sur deux siècles et dans certaines œuvres majeures de la modernité. De nouer des fils, d'ouvrir des pistes, de mettre en écho du début du xixe siècle jusqu'à des textes tout à fait contemporains cette problématique union, cette tension constitutive entre deuil et écriture. Pour être fidèles à ce qui pourrait être la définition même de la littérature : l'incessant dialogue entre les vivants et les morts.

The Spoken Language in a Multimodal Context
Recently, research in the Humanities is showing an increasing interest in exactly how language and other semiotic resources support each other. The eighteen articles of this book focus on the interplay between spoken language and other modalities and address a spectrum of cross-modal resources and their functions. They also discuss how multimodal resources are exploited to increase communicative effectiveness and broaden accessibility to knowledge. The systematic examination of the fluctuations in the definition of the terms "neo-avant-garde" and "post-modern" is at the base of this study, which therefore evolves through the comparative analysis of different contexts, with particular reference to the Italian one (Group 63) and to the French one (Nouveau Roman). Thus, an articulated framework of deeply intertwined narrative experiences emerges, making a valid and completely original contribution to the discussion on well-established historical categories within the literary history and critical theory of the second half of the 20th century.
