Subhan and I: My Adventures with Angling Legend of India

Set in the heart of Indian bush, Subhan and I is about angling for the hump-backed mahseer, the greatest fresh water fighting fish in the world, under the most harrowing circumstances, in a swim which many experts believe cannot hold big fish whilst others state that even if they were there landing them would be impossible. It is against this challenging backdrop, two men— Subhan and the author—from socially different backgrounds battle hard to outwit and land the elusive mahseer in the turbulent waters of River Cauvery. The book is not just a treasure trove of information on angling and life in the bush, it is also about the life and trials faced by the two men, lost in the madness of trying to save the mahseer against all odds. Of special interest to the readers will be the tips on angling. The many anecdotes related to the author’s family and life experiences lend the book its heart and soul. It also traces the position of the fish in history as it flirts with the Gods of our world. The book is a must-read for not only anglers but also wildlife enthusiasts.

FROM THE AUTHOR OF OPEN SECRETS, THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE HUMAN TRAGEDY IN BENGAL BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER PARTITION. Maloy and his mother board the Dacca- Sylhet Express from Bhairab in 1950. The young boy notices a tick mark in white chalk on the side of the carriage, a sign that worries him. The train enters the Anderson Bridge, and a blob, of fresh bloos hits Maloy's face. Bodies roll down to the river... As a young boy, Maloy Krishna Dhar, made the perilous journey to India from the East Pakistan. Politics had taken a communal colour in this region-age-old bonds between Hindi and Muslim Bengalis had deteriorated. The situation was made worse by near famine conditions and the brutal suppression of unrest. Villages were torched, marauding attackers had a free hand, and trains became charnel houses on wheels. The partion in Bengal had its share of tragedy, of lives unmade and lost, but it is relatively less chronicled than events in Punjab. Maloy Krishna Dhar's Train to India is a graphic and moving account of that turbulent and unforgotten era of Bengal History.

Islamic Militant Activism in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany

Based on ethnographic research in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany, this book presents a novel approach to studying Muslim militant activism. While much existing research focuses on the process of radicalization, these authors introduce a different set of questions that investigate specific modes of activism, and their engagement with dominant discourses and practices in media and state policies. Drawing on social movement theory and Foucault’s work on counter-conduct, this research explores how daʿwa networks came about, and how activists developed themselves in interaction with state and media practices. This perspective highlights a form of activism and resistance in which activists turn against policies and debates centring on Muslims and Islam, while attempting to create and protect an alternative space for themselves in which they can experience Islam according to their own perception of it. The study will contribute to debates about resistance, social movements and militant activism among Muslims in Europe.

Death Rites & Ancestor Worship

Death Rites & Ancestor Worship

Death is the ultimate truth of life. All religions consider birth and death in the same package and have given importance to death rites and ancestor worship. With death, the non-existence begins. It is something common in all religions. The central concern of all philosophies is not life but death. Man knows that life is finite and the future beyond life is unknown. So, it is natural to ask, is there any life after death? If yes, it is certainly a life without a body. Death is the end of physical existence, but it is not the end of a person. So, death rites and ancestor worship arose in all societies. Ancestor worship is the belief that at the death of an individual, his/her social personality is not erased; but rather transformed. The basis of ancestor worship lies in this belief found in all human societies. It also creates a distance between the living and the dead while commemorating the dead and paying respect to them.
