Sultana Afroz seeks to clarify the Islamic heritage of the Maroons and the position of Islam in the freeing of the enslaved Africans in Jamaica. The text covers events preceding and reasons for, the Emancipation Act of 1833. It is postulated that those enslaved people of the Islamic faith never accepted Christian beliefs, although outwardly agreeing with these as was required of them by the authorities then in charge. It is therefore stated that they remained constant in their belief in the Islamic religion.'The prevalence of Islamic traditions retained in Jamaica denotes the continuing devotion to Islam which was a strong factor in their eventual emancipation. Engaging the past, the present, and the future, The Workings of Diaspora: Jamaican Maroons and the Claims to Sovereignty shows how the lived experience of Jamaican Maroons is linked to the African Diaspora. In so doing, this interdisciplinary undertaking interrogates the definition of Diaspora but mainly emphasizes the term’s use. Mario Nisbett demonstrates that an examination of Jamaican Maroon communities, particularly their socio-political development, can further highlight the significance of the African Diaspora as an analytical tool. He shows how Jamaican Maroons inform resistance to abjection, a denial of full humanity, through claiming their African origin and developing solidarity and consciousness in order to affirm black humanity. Beginning with Latin America in the fifteenth century, this book, first published in 2005, is a social history of the experiences of African Muslims and their descendants throughout the Americas, including the Caribbean. The record under slavery is examined, as is the post-slavery period into the twentieth century. The experiences vary, arguably due to some extent to the Old World context. Muslim revolts in Brazil are also discussed, especially in 1835, by way of a nuanced analysis. The second part of the book looks at the emergence of Islam among the African-descended in the United States in the twentieth century, with successive chapters on Noble Drew Ali, Elijah Muhammad, and Malcolm X, with a view to explaining how orthodoxy arose from varied unorthodox roots.
