Master Laster

Master Laster takes you beyond Sachin Tendulkar’s career aggregates and passionate assertions . . . There are almost as many books about Sachin Tendulkar as there are centuries by him. But, just as there is only one Tendulkar century that came in a winning run chase in the last innings of a Test match, rare are the books that look at his personal records through the prism of how much they mattered to the team. In fact there are none, because the easiest thing to do is to produce adulatory tomes for his doting fans. But there are an equal number of cricket fans out there who want to know something more than gushing accolades and who don't shy away from asking difficult questions. The book c...

Originally a concern primarily of social studies and economics, poverty has emerged as a significant thematic focus and analytical tool in literary and cultural studies in the last two decades. The "new poverty studies" are dedicated to analyzing representations of poverty and the poor in literature and the visual arts, in the news media and in social practices. They aim at exploring the frameworks of representation that impact the affective and ethical responses of audiences to disenfranchised groups such as the poor. The contributions to this volume focus on representations of poverty in the Anglophone postcolonial world, exploring, for example, contemporary discourses on poverty in the UK, filmic representations of Nairobi slums or the agency of the poor in literature from India.

A call to reclaim and rethink the field of designing as a liberal art where diverse voices come together to shape the material world. We live in a material world of designed artifacts, both digital and analog. We think of ourselves as users; the platforms, devices, or objects provide a service that we can use. But is this really the case? We Are Not Users argues that people cannot be reduced to the entity called “user”; we are not homogenous but diverse. That buzz of dissonance that we hear reflects the difficulty of condensing our diversity into “one size fits all.” This book proposes that a new understanding of design could resolve that dissonance, and issues a call to reclaim and ...

Ever since the Radia tapes were leaked, my wife has been extremely upset. I tried to reason with her. ‘Believe me,’ I said, ‘I did talk to Niira Radia. Is it my fault that my conversation with her has not been leaked?’ Often described as ‘the funniest ever writer to have come out of trans-Yamuna Delhi in the 75–77kg category’, G. Sampath launches a hilarious counter-offensive against perpetually offense-taking offensive people and issues in this small but potent volume. From Ajay Devgn’s nipples to his wife’s real estate ambitions, Arnab Goswami’s special powers to male virgins’ special problems, sari-obsessed women to pesticide-obsessed farmers, Sampath runs his vampire-like fingernails across the private obsessions and public frustrations of the Indian Everyman. Wily old genius that he is, where you expect him to draw blood, he draws a chuckle.

Guts Amidst Bloodbath is the story of Aunshuman Gaekwad as told by him with many fascinating insights by his teammates, opponents, administrators, selectors, umpires, friends and family members. His is a name associated with Indian Cricket for more than 50 years in some form or the other. He has been a solid opening batsman, an astute administrator, an able selector, a successful coach, an analytical media person and above all a helping human being. But for a player who began his First-Class career as an off-spinner and lower order batsman, to become a Test opener for India is nothing short of remarkable. To play the fast bowlers of the 1970s and 1980s without helmets and other protective ge...
