Glasgow, 1928. As the Depression takes hold, a young woman embarks upon life. Jess Crichton is the bright one of the family, a sensible, conscientious girl whose self-inflicted failure at school makes her all the more determined to make something of herself -- unlike her frivolous sister Peggy. Jess' first job as a shorthand typist brings her into contact with people very different from herself -- even her ever-critical mother, always so quick to chide -- cannot fail but be impressed. But there are lessons to be learned along the way, and Jess' first experiences with the opposite sex do not bode well. Until she travels to Skye on holiday, and her mind is opened up to new horizons... As the country heads towards a second World War, she embarks upon a journey of self-discovery that will, ultimately, lead to true love...

Expanding Fields of Architectural Discourse and Practice presents a selection of essays, architectural experiments and works that explore the diversity within the fields of contemporary architectural practice and discourse. Specific in this selection is the question of how and why architecture can and should manifest in a critical and reflective capacity, as well as to examine how the discipline currently resonates with contemporary art practice. It does so by reflecting on the first 10 years of the architectural journal, P.E.A.R. (2009 to 2019). The volume argues that the initial aims of the journal – to explore and celebrate the myriad forms through which architecture can exist – are n...

America, 1955. For a 16-year-old boy out in the world alone for the first time, every day's an education in the hard work and boredom of migrant labor; every day teaches him something more about friendship, or hunger, or profanity, or lust--always lust. He learns how a poker game, or hitching a ride, can turn deadly. He discovers the secret sadness and generosity to be found on a lonely farm in the middle of nowhere. Then he joins up with a carnival and becomes a grunt, running a ride and shilling for the geek show. He's living the hard carny life and beginning to see the world through carny eyes. He's tough. Cynical. By the end of the summer he's pretty sure he knows it all. Until he meets Ruby.

In this bibliography we have attempted to assemble the major portion of the technical literature on the American woodcock (Philohela minor). Included are scientific references published between 1927 and 1978. We chose 1927 as the cutoff date for early literature because of the importance of Arthur Cleveland Bent's work in 1927, and because most articles before 1927 are descriptive and do not add appreciably to the scientific literature on the species. An excellent listing of the early literature may be found in the 1936 monograph by Olin Sewall Pettingill, Jr. No previously published bibliography devoted solely to woodcock is available. References are listed alphabetically by author beginning on page 1. Following each reference is a number(s) that corresponds to one of the 22 subject headings listed on page iii.
