This edited collection explores how migrants played a major role in the creation and settlement of the British Empire, by focusing on a series of Australian case studies. Despite their shared experiences of migration and settlement, migrants nonetheless often exhibited distinctive cultural identities, which could be deployed for advantage. Migration established global mobility as a defining feature of the Empire. Ethnicity, class and gender were often powerful determinants of migrant attitudes and behaviour. This volume addresses these considerations, illuminating the complexity and diversity of the British Empire’s global immigration story. Since 1788, the propensity of the populations of Britain and Ireland to immigrate to Australia varied widely, but what this volume highlights is their remarkable diversity in character and impact. This book redresses popular interpretations of concealed objects, enigmatically discovered within the fabric of post-medieval buildings. A wide variety of objects have been found up chimneybreasts, bricked up in walls, and concealed within recesses: old shoes, mummified cats, horse skulls, pierced hearts, to name only some. The most common approach to these finds is to apply a one-size-fits-all analysis and label them survivals and apotropaic (evil-averting) devices. This book reconsiders such interpretations, exploring the invention and reinvention of traditions regarding building magic. The title Building Magic therefore refers to more than practices that alter the fabric of buildings, but also to processes of building magic into our interpretations of the enigmatic material evidence and into our engagements with the buildings we inhabit and frequent.

This book proves into hearsays surrounding Koreans in America. My writings illustrate how race has impacted my life and other Koreans vis-à-vis white Americans. I wrote articles to illustrate the interplay of my Korean heritage on my minority status. The range of social issues that I touch upon in my articles includes affirmative action, dating, church life, sexual harassment, volunteerism, sorority life, dorm life, politics, travel and the psycho-dynamics of my relationships with white peers, Koreans abroad, Korean visitors and other Korean immigrants. My short stories identify my disillusionments with some of the disingenuous elements of racial integration. My short stories touch upon issues ranging from racism, sexism, lookism, abortion, homosexuality, and anti-social behaviors. Anti-social behaviors towards a person of racial minority range from a certain curt unfriendliness to maintain distance to abhorrent crimes perpetrated against a person of racial minority in order to maintain status quo due to the notion that minority achievements manifest disruption to status quo. My stories poke fun at these ill at ease individuals with racial integration.
To what extent have Hollywood feature films shaped the meanings that Americans attach to alcoholics, their families, and the alcoholic condition? To what extent has the mass culture of the movie industry itself been conceptually shaped by a broad, external societal discourse? Norman Denzin brings to his life-long study of alcoholism a searching interest in how cultural texts signify and lend themselves to interpretation within a social nexus. Both historical and diachronic in his approach, Denzin identifies five periods in the alcoholism films made between 1932 and the end of the 1980s, and offers a detailed critical reading of thirty-seven films produced during these six decades.
