Albert of Aachen: Historia Ierosolimitana, History of the Journey to Jerusalem
The Historia Ierosolimitana, attributed to Albert of Aachen, is the most complete, the most detailed and the most colourful of the contemporary narratives of the First Crusade and the careers of the first generation of Latin settlers in Outremer from 1095-1119. It comprises twelve books, the first six telling the story of the First Crusade through to the capture of Jerusalem in 1099 and its aftermath, and the final six describing the internal and external politics of the crusader states during the first two decades of settlement. Largely neglected by crusades scholarship, this modern edition and translation allows it to be studied alongside better known accounts. This volume has been prepared from a critical study of all the extant manuscripts, and features the definitive Latin account, with English translation. Edgington supports the translation and text with an authoritative introduction, extensive historical notes and critical study of the work. This volume will alter the focus of crusades studies, generating interest in previously disregarded aspects of crusade and settlement in the first decades of the twelfth century.
Baldwin I of Jerusalem, 1100-1118
Baldwin of Boulogne was born the youngest of three sons and marked out for a clerical career, yet in turn he became a First Crusader, first Latin count of Edessa and the founder of the Latin kingdom of Jerusalem. Nevertheless, remarkably, he has never been the subject of a full-length biography. This study examines in detail the stages of Baldwin’s career, returning to the contemporary evidence to discover the qualities that enabled him not only to succeed his brother as ruler in 1100 but to maintain and expand the new kingdom of Jerusalem through the next eighteen years in the face of aggression from Muslim enemies and rivalry from fellow crusaders.

Albert of Aachen's History of the Journey to Jerusalem presents the story of the First Crusade (1095-1099) and the first generation of Latin settlers in the Levant (1099-1119). Volume 2, The Early History of the Latin States, provides a surprising level of detail about the reign of King Baldwin I (1100-1118), especially its earlier years and the crusading expeditions of 1101. Deeds Done Beyond the Sea
This volume celebrates Peter Edbury’s career by bringing together seventeen essays by colleagues, former students and friends which focus on three of his major research interests: the great historian of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, William of Tyre, and his Historia rerum in partibus transmarinis gestarum and its continuations; medieval Cyprus, in particular under the Lusignans; and the Military Orders in the Middle Ages. All based on original research, the contributions to this volume include new work on manuscripts, ranging from a Hospitaller rental document of the twelfth century to a seventeenth-century manuscript of Cypriot interest; studies of language and terminology in William of Tyre’s chronicle and its continuations; thematic surveys; legal and commercial investigations pertaining to Cyprus; aspects of memorialization, and biographical studies. The Chanson D'Antioche
This is the first translation into English of the Old French Chanson d'Antioche, a text which has long intrigued historians and literary scholars. Uniquely among epic poems, it follows closely a well-documented historical event - the First Crusade - and appears to include substantial and genuine historical content. The introduction assesses the history and status of the text, while the translation is provided with extensive annotation and with appendices on a different manuscript tradition and on real and fictional characters. The work provides a whole new perspective on crusading in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
Walter the Chancellor’s The Antiochene Wars
Walter the Chancellor's vivid first-hand account of the wars between the Muslims and the principality of Antioch in the early 12th century describes a less well-known period in the history of the Crusades, and provides a useful counterpart to the usual focus on Jerusalem. It is here presented for the first time in English, along with a selection of comparative sources and an important introduction assessing the work's place in the historiography of the Crusader states, and analysing the military campaigns it details. As a highly-placed Antiochene official, Walter was able to write the most authoritative account of the principality's fortunes and internal workings, and his book also sheds light on the relationship between Latin settlement in the Levant and contemporary Western perceptions of Islam and Eastern Christianity.
