Connecting the Library to the Curriculum

This book shares the experiences of the Monash University and La Trobe University libraries in Melbourne, Australia, regarding the paths taken to transform and reposition these libraries within their institutions. The book showcases the respective frameworks used to enhance library skill development programs and addresses central topics such as partnerships, pedagogy, curriculum, emerging skill agendas and student success. It offers a theoretical and practical approach to overcoming persistent challenges and discusses several pertinent areas, e.g., establishing library-faculty partnerships, explicitly and coherently developing students’ research skills with discipline-specific content and transforming perceptions of academic libraries’ educative role. The book highlights the current issue of enhancing students’ research skills, which is forcing many academic libraries to reassess their established practices and adopt pedagogical approaches that will more readily resonate with faculty. Chapters 3 and 19 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Internationalizing Higher Education

Globalization is a multifaceted phenomenon, and one of its major components is the internationalization of education. The increasing pace and complexity of global knowledge flows, and the accelerating exchange of educational ideas, practices and policies, are important drivers of globalization. Higher Education is a key site for these flows and exchanges. This book casts a critical eye on the internationalization of higher education. It peels back taken-for-granted practices and beliefs, explores the gaps and silences in current pedagogy and practices, and addresses the ambiguities, tensions and contradictions in internationalization. In this volume, scholars from a range of disciplines and regions critically examine the co modification of higher education, teaching and support for international students, international partnerships for aid and trade, and the impacts on academics’ work.

This volume not only illustrates the research that is being done in the area of human resources in entrepreneurial firms but it raises many issues that exemplify the complexity of the topic. It is not a case of small versus large firms. There are small established firms, small start-up firms and small high growth firms. As pointed out by Alvarez and Molloy these firms differ with established firms dealing with risk while high growth firms deal with uncertainty. These firms vary in ownership based on family ownership, ownership by founder, or some type of privately held stock ownership. These firms also vary based on how they handle people issues: structure versus lack of structure; the traditional HR functional approach versus the use of people management practices; person-job fit versus person- organization fit; ability and work experience versus integrity and conscientiousness; work processes and bureaucracy versus agility and adaptability; tasks versus roles; in-house professionals versus reliance on third-party vendors; traditional pay versus variable pay; short-term orientation of incentives versus long-term orientation of incentives; and many more.

Widening International Entrepreneurship Research addresses several unresolved questions and thus moves forward by acknowledging that future international entrepreneurship research needs to find new ways to further enrich its knowledge. The book presents the results of six studies that explain how human resource management contributes to the strategy of early internationalization, compares different experiences in several countries, assesses innovation in international entrepreneurship education teaching, analyses the effects of entrepreneurial education on entrepreneurial skills, and provides new knowledge about the effect of digitalization on firm performance in international markets. This collection of papers reviews the main factors that have been identified as having a high explanatory power at different levels.
