A preocupação com o tema alfabetização em geral e, especificamente, da pessoa com surdocegueira, em particular a congênita, levou a uma busca por referenciais (nacionais e internacionais). Observou-se, então, a escassez de pesquisas sobre o referido tema, e constatou-se, também, a carência de registros acadêmicos que pudessem subsidiar o trabalho do docente e das instituições de ensino que atendam a essa população, principalmente no que diz respeito a esse tema. Deve-se destacar, dessa forma, que este livro se constitui a partir de um entendimento sobre os seguintes assuntos: surdocegueira; a teoria histórico-cultural de Vigotsky; a abordagem coativa de Van Dijk; o toque, tendo a Gestalt e o Sistema Braille como possibilidades; a alfabetização e a formação de professores. Ou seja, a partir disso, foram propostas a identificação e o conhecimento dos caminhos possíveis que levassem à alfabetização da criança com surdocegueira congênita em diferentes idades, a partir do relato feito por professores de diferentes estados brasileiros que tenham atuado ou atuem na área.
