Polyculturalism and Discourse
This volume gathers together research by ten scholars engaging with multicultural discourse in Australia and Germany. The term 'polyculturalism' rather than 'multiculturalism' is employed deliberately to re-open a space in which the workings of discourse on culturally diverse societies, both as archive or practice, and as intervention, can be considered in greater depth. The inter-cultural perspective and wide range of disciplinary affiliations exhibited by the essays in this volume contribute to this goal: whereas the majority of discourse analytical work addresses the diversity of speaking positions, as well as the arbitrariness of ascribed meanings, within a historical framework delimited by national boundaries and disciplinary boundaries, the texts collected here transgress this perspective in working comparatively between Australia and Germany.
Gender, Health and Ageing
The different research fields – gerontology, gender and health – have generated different views, knowledge and foci on ageing, health and gender. It is now necessary to integrate these aspects into research, policy and practice. The objective of this book is to provide an overview of gender, health and ageing. Important theoretical concepts, such as life course and "Lebenslagen" in old age, or differences in men's health, are introduced. It is increasingly important to build a European basis of knowledge, to conduct discussions on European research findings, and to develop European research frameworks. In this volume, central theoretical debates on gender impacts on life course and old-age health, and vital issues of health research in the context of gender and old age are introduced. Specific aspects, such as the impact of gender and age on cardiovascular health, elder abuse and mental health, or care between gender relations, gender roles and gender constructs, are pointed out. Special attention is given to the impact of social, political and economic change in different New EU Member States, like Hungary, Poland and Slovenia.
Migration und Engagement
Anne-Katrin Schührer beschäftigt sich in diesem Buch mit der Motivation bürgerschaftlichen Engagements im Kontext von Migration und sozialer Ungleichheit. Empirische Grundlage sind 28 Interviews mit Frauen mit Zuwanderungsgeschichte, die sich in Mütter- und Familienzentren und Mehrgenerationenhäusern in Baden-Württemberg engagieren. Dabei soll insbesondere thematisiert werden, inwiefern bürgerschaftliches Engagement als Suche nach Anerkennung, Lebensbewältigung und sozialer Inklusion verstanden werden kann und welchen Beitrag Einrichtungen und Vereine leisten können, um zu anerkennungssensiblen Orten zu werden.

Migration, Alter, Identität
Wie beschreiben ältere Menschen mit Migrationserfahrung ihre Persönlichkeit? Mathias Fuchs stellt individuelle Stimmen vor, um exemplarisch die Vielfalt an Persönlichkeitsentwürfen unter Seniorinnen und Senioren aufzuzeigen, die im Laufe ihres Lebens nach Deutschland eingewandert sind. In drei Fallanalysen lässt er Menschen über sich selbst erzählen, ohne sie dabei von vornherein auf die Themen Alter und Migration zu reduzieren. Vielmehr wird den Interviewten es selbst überlassen, die Erzählkontexte zur Beschreibung ihrer Persönlichkeit zu wählen. Auf diese Weise entsteht ein differenziertes Bild dieser Personengruppe, die keineswegs homogen ist und in der eine breite Palette personaler Identitäten zu finden ist.
