New Light on Dark Stars

Perhaps the most common question that a child asks when he or she sees the night sky from a dark site for the first time is: 'How many stars are there?' This happens to be a question which has exercised the intellectual skills of many astronomers over the course of most of the last century, including, for the last two decades, one of the authors of this text. Until recently, the most accurate answer was 'We are not certain, but there is a good chance that almost all of them are M dwarfs. ' Within the last three years, results from new sky-surveys - particularly the first deep surveys at near infrared wavelengths - have provided a breakthrough in this subject, solidifying our census of the lo...

Solar and Stellar Flares and their Effects on Planets (IAU S320)

Solar and Stellar Flares and their Effects on Planets (IAU S320)

Recent advances in observations and modelling of solar and stellar flares have opened up new perspectives for understanding the fundamental physical mechanisms of magnetic energy storage and release, particle acceleration, and their radiative and dynamical processes. New interest in this topic is stimulated by Kepler observations and the discovery of superflares on solar-type stars, which raises questions about the possibility of such flares on the Sun, and the potential effects of superflares on terrestrial and extraterrestrial planets, including their impact on the origin and evolution of life. IAU Symposium 320 discusses the recent advances in observations and theories of solar and stellar flares, focusing on the understanding of their phenomenological and physical aspects, as well as consequences for terrestrial planets and exoplanets. This volume will be useful to researchers of all levels working in this fascinating and rapidly developing field of astronomy.

The information age has begotten turmoil. It seems that the more information we have, the less peace the average person has. To many, as impression has developed that modern science has disproven the existence of the metaphysical realm, and doomed us to a sterile, pointless wandering in the widerness of minutiae. This couldn't be further from the truth! A reasonably skeptical look at modern philosophy, science, archeology and history point overwhelmingly in a single direction, and the truth that it points to is blissful and eternal.

The Eighth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) started a new phase in 2008 August, with new instrumentation and new surveys focused on Galactic structure and chemical evolution, measurements of the baryon oscillation feature in the clustering of galaxies and the quasar Ly[Greek letter alpha] forest, and a radial velocity search for planets around ~8000 stars. This paper describes the first data release of SDSS-III (and the eighth counting from the beginning of the SDSS). The release includes five-band imaging of roughly 5200 deg2 in the southern Galactic cap, bringing the total footprint of the SDSS imaging to 14,555 deg2, or over a third of the Celestial Sphere. All the imaging data have been reproces...

Flare Observations in the IRIS Era: What Have We Learned, and What’s Next?

Since its launch in 2013, IRIS has observed more than 10 X-class, over 100 M-class and more than 600 C-class flares at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. Thanks to the rich diagnostics that cover the physical conditions of the solar atmosphere from the photosphere to the hottest parts of the flaring corona, IRIS observations have provided exciting new results and constraints on flare heating models, significantly expanding our knowledge of how flares are triggered, and how the non-thermal energy is released, propagates downward from the corona, and is deposited in the low atmosphere. At the same time, the new discoveries provided by IRIS have raised new unresolved questions and n...
