The series Advances in Polymer Science presents critical reviews of the present and future trends in polymer and biopolymer science. It covers all areas of research in polymer and biopolymer science including chemistry, physical chemistry, physics, material science. The thematic volumes are addressed to scientists, whether at universities or in industry, who wish to keep abreast of the important advances in the covered topics. Advances in Polymer Science enjoys a longstanding tradition and good reputation in its community. Each volume is dedicated to a current topic, and each review critically surveys one aspect of that topic, to place it within the context of the volume. The volumes typical...

In 2006 the Dutch government funded an 8 year and 20 million euro research program on Self Healing Materials. The research was not to be restricted to one material class or one particular healing approach. It was to explore all opportunities to create self healing behavior in engineering and functional materials and to bring the new materials to a level where they could be tested in real life applications. At its launch, the IOP program was the very first integrated multi-material approach to this field in the world. The research was to be conducted at Dutch universities working in collaboration with industry. With the IOP Self Healing Materials program coming to an end, this book presents t...

Philosophy and Engineering: An Emerging Agenda

Whereas science, technology, and medicine have all called forth dedicated philosophical investigations, a fourth major contributor to the technoscientific world in which we all live - that is, engineering - has been accorded almost none of the philosophical attention it deserves. This volume thus offers a first characterisation of this important new field, by some of the primary philosophers and ethicists interested in engineering and leading engineers interested in philosophical reflections. The volume deals with such questions as: What is engineering? In what respect does engineering differ from science? What ethical problems does engineering raise? By what ethical principles are engineers...

Handbook of Textile Fibre Structure

  • Publisher: Elsevier

Due to their complexity and diversity, understanding the structure of textile fibres is of key importance. This authoritative two-volume collection provides a comprehensive review of the structure of an extensive range of textile fibres.Volume 1 begins with an introductory set of chapters on fibre structure and methods to characterise fibres. The second part of the book covers the structure of manufactured polymer fibres such as polyester, polyamides, polyolefin, elastomeric and aramid fibres as well as high-modulus, high-tenacity polymer fibres. Chapters discuss fibre formation during processing and how this affects fibre structure and mechanical properties. A companion volume reviews natur...

High-performance Hybrid-fibre Concrete

"In the research project presented in this PhD-thesis, an innovative type of fibre concrete is developed, with improved both the tensile strength and the ductility: the Hybrid-Fibre Concrete (HFC). The expression "Hybrid" refers to the "hybridisation" of fibres: short and long steel fibres were combined together in one concrete mixture. This is opposite to conventional steel fibre concretes, which contain only one type of fibre. The basic goal of combining short and long fibres is from one side to improve the tensile strength by the action of short fibres, and from the other side to improve the ductility by the action of long fibres." "In this research project, all important aspects needed f...

Modeling of the Damage Mechanisms in AlMgSi Alloys

With the growth in importance of the aluminium industry, has come increased demand to invest into the quality improvement of the different aluminium based hot extruded products. One of the main mechanisms, which can influence deformation at high temperature within the 6xxx aluminium, is linked to the presence of the AlFeSi intermetallic phases. These phases severely restrict hot workability when present as hard and brittle plate-like precipitates b-AlFeSi. Damage initiation occurs in these alloys by decohesion or fracture of these intermetallic inclusions. The understanding and modeling of the deformation and fracture behavior of aluminium alloys at room and at hot working temperature is ver...

Materials Experience

There currently exists an abundance of materials selection advice for designers suited to solving technical product requirements. In contrast, a stark gap can be found in current literature that articulates the very real personal, social, cultural and economic connections between materials and the design of the material world. In Materials Experience: Fundamentals of Materials and Design, thirty-four of the leading academicians and experts, alongside 8 professional designers, have come together for the first time to offer their expertise and insights on a number of topics common to materials and product design. The result is a very readable and varied panorama on the world of materials and p...

Materials Experience

This chapter describes the development and properties of novel functional composite materials consisting of aligned piezo-ceramic particles or fibers in a polymeric matrix, which can be fully integrated in thermoset or thermoplastic products. The materials have a low potential for applications requiring actuation but have attractive sensorial and energy harvesting properties. The new composites combine special functionalities with easy processing and adequate mechanical properties close to those of the polymer matrix. Such composite materials may find use in applications such as integrated pressure sensors and energy harvesting devices, which can create a number of new opportunities for the design domain.

Self-Healing Polymers

Self-healing is a well-known phenomenon in nature: a broken bone merges after some time and if skin is damaged, the wound will stop bleeding and heals again. This concept can be mimicked in order to create polymeric materials with the ability to regenerate after they have suffered degradation or wear. Already realized applications are used in aerospace engineering, and current research in this fascinating field shows how different self-healing mechanisms proven successful by nature can be adapted to produce even more versatile materials. The book combines the knowledge of an international panel of experts in the field and provides the reader with chemical and physical concepts for self-healing polymers, including aspects of biomimetic processes of healing in nature. It shows how to design self-healing polymers and explains the dynamics in these systems. Different self-healing concepts such as encapsulated systems and supramolecular systems are detailed. Chapters on analysis and friction detection in self-healing polymers and on applications round off the book.
