Cross-Curricular Dimensions of Language Learning and Teaching
This volume discusses a variety of aspects of cross-curricularity in language learning and teaching. It highlights the multidimensional character of language classes conducted at different educational levels, from pre-school to the university level, and discusses several important issues from a theoretical perspective, providing certain practical solutions and implications to the enumerated problems. The material of the book is divided into four parts, essentially reflecting the main areas of interest here. These parts deal with such notions as language learning and teaching; media in foreign language didactics; art and literature in language education; and (inter-)culturality and cross-curricularity in language learning and teaching. The book will be particularly useful to teacher-practitioners and scholars interested in various forms of integrating the content of different school subjects in language education.

Didactics of Polish as a Foreign and Second Language against the European Background
This volume starts with an overview of the history of teaching Polish as a foreign language from the beginning of the 16th century to 1939. The authors then present the rapid development of teaching Polish as a foreign language from 1992 to 2015. This is supplemented by information on the methodology of teaching Polish. In the next part they describe the didactics of the Polish language abroad, followed by the introduction of the Polish language policy and the promotion of Polish outside Poland. Then they present the teaching of Polish as a second language and the problems of communication. At the end, information is given about the achievements of European didactics in the field of teaching Polish as a foreign and second language. The volume concludes with a proposal for the creation of a didactics of European languages (including Slavic languages as well).
Promoting multilingual practices in school and home environments
European society in the 21st century is characterised by increasing linguistic and cultural diversity and this offers valuable resources both on the economic and ideational level. At the same time, this growing diversity raises challenges to societies in terms of ensuring greater equity and social cohesion. In this book, the authors discuss the role of languages and multilingualism in the education system and at the interface of formal education and the home environment in this time of transition. They offer perspectives of four European countries, namely Germany, Greece, Ireland and Poland. Conceptual Metaphors as an Organisational Framework of the Specialist Language of IT
Magdalena Krawiec provides insight into the underlying conceptual structure of information technology and gives a plausible account of the patterns of metaphorical conceptualisation manifested in the specialist language of IT. Conceptual metaphors map our concrete experience onto abstract experiences, so as to effortlessly get hold of new emergent concepts. On the one hand, our ability to make our world thinkable rests on the use of our past experiences, whereas on the other hand, IT specialists familiarise themselves with yet unknown conceptual structures through the interaction with the specialist scenery. Specialists' thinkability of the specialist surroundings is grounded in their perception of similarity which enables them to adapt both conceptually and linguistically to their specialist practice.
Relationship Matters
The volume begins by outlining the development of the teacherstudent relationship according to the main psychological theories. Next, it points to the inseparability of cognitive and emotional factors in the learning process. By referring to the major positive psychology theories, i.e., Broaden-and-Build, Flow, and PERMA, the book lays the foundation for studying the full spectrum of learner emotions experienced while learning a foreign language. Finally, it provides a research-based analysis of teacher-related variables that affect learner classroom well-being and ill-being.
EU Regulations as a Hybrid Genre
The study, based on the principles of genre analysis, speech act theory applied to legal discourse and thick description of legal texts, was carried out on a corpus of ninety EU regulations on subjects (e.g. customs union, competition rules) that fall under the exclusive competence of the European Union according to the principle of conferral. The findings shed light on a new approach to hybridity in EU secondary legislation. EU regulations, which are hybrid legal texts, are inevitably influenced by the legal framework from which they originate and by the political and historical reasons that led the founding fathers of the former European Community to address the problem of the so-called 'democratic deficit' also from a textual point of view, and not only by means of economic and political strategies. The textual peculiarity of EU regulation is particularly significant when combined with the contractual nature of EU law. Thus, the results of this study support the hypothesis according to which EU regulations are an instrument created to regulate social behaviour and to address the phenomenon of the 'democratic deficit' from a textual perspective.
