Moral Seascapes
We are no strangers today to visual representations of human suffering at sea: the refugee crisis that continues to play out in the seascape between Europe and Africa (and not only there) yields an ever-growing archive of humanitarian tragedy. As both a visual backdrop and a lethal medium of unequal mobility, maritime space and landscape play a significant role in mediating the ethical demands of this crisis. Yet, there has been little exploration of the longer history of morality’s role in our understanding of aesthetic representations of the sea. The diverse contributions in Moral Seascapes explore the various symbolic forms through which these shifting moral norms and values have been manifested, contributing to debates concerning the place of the sea in visual and literary cultures and the history of morality and emotion, as well as the emergence of modern subjectivity. Drawing on a range of interdisciplinary perspectives such as visual culture, experimental art history, literary studies, history and philosophy, Moral Seascapes develops distinctive new insights into the relationship between the moral cultures of modernity and the image of the sea.

Wie digitale Vernetzung unsere Gesellschaft verändert, gehört zu den drängendsten Fragen der Gegenwart. Wie jedoch dieser Prozess die zeitgenössische Literatur prägt, erfährt seit der enthusiastischen Erforschung von Hypertexten um die Jahrtausendwende wenig kulturwissenschaftliche Aufmerksamkeit. Dabei lohnt es sich, die Beobachtungsperspektive von der Literatur im Netz auf das Netz in der Literatur zu verschieben. Denn informations- und kommunikationstechnologische Netzwerke – und vor allem das Internet – schreiben sich zunehmend in die Romane der Gegenwart ein. Nicht selten avanciert das ›Netz der Netze‹ sogar zum inhaltlichen Kernelement von erzählten Welten und wird dort vielfältig wirksam: von der räumlichen und temporalen Inszenierung des Motivs über das Zusammenspiel von Figurenkonstellationen und Erzähltechnik bis hin zur formalästhetischen und symbolischen Ausgestaltung der Texte. About Sieves and Sieving
The sieve exhibits a wide-ranging symbolism that extends across art history, philosophy, anthropology, psychoanalysis, and gender studies. Barbara Baert looks at the sieve from an interdisciplinary perspective and from four different innovative methodological angles: as motif and symbol, as technique and as paradigm. The sieve as motif goes back to Roman stories the Vestal Virgins. In later times, their impermeable sieve, which - according to legend - they used to fetch water from the River Tiber, was iconographically transferred to Elisabeth I as a sign of her integrity. Furthermore, the long durée life of sieves as symbolic-technical utilitarian object is investigated: in examples from the Jewish folklore, the Berber culture, and ancient Egypt.

Christiane Hauser analysiert die Organisationsstrukturen und Rahmenbedingungen der Kommunikation in Hochschulen. Dabei stehen das Handeln und die Zusammenarbeit von Hochschulkommunikator*innen im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Der sozialintegrative Ansatz liefert den konzeptionellen Rahmen, um detailliert die Hochschulkommunikation an drei deutschen Universitäten zu untersuchen.
