Advances in Social Simulation
This book covers the latest advances in applying agent-based modelling in social sciences. The Social Simulation Conference is the major global conference devoted to this topic. It is aimed at promoting social simulation and computational social science. This year’s special theme is “Social Simulation geared towards Post-Pandemic times”, focused not only on questions raised by the current pandemic but also on future challenges related to economic recovery, such as localization, globalization, inequality, sustainable growth and social changes induced by progressive digitalization, data availability and artificial intelligence. Love and Despair
Love and Despair explores the multiple and mostly unknown ways progressive and conservative Catholic actors, such as priests, lay activists, journalists, intellectuals, and filmmakers, responded to the significant social and cultural shifts that formed competing notions of modernity in Cold War Mexico. Jaime M. Pensado demonstrates how the Catholic Church as a heterogeneous institution—with key transnational networks in Latin America and Western Europe—was invested in youth activism, state repression, and the counterculture from the postwar period to the more radical Sixties. Similar to their secular counterparts, progressive Catholics often saw themselves as revolutionary actors and nearly always framed their activism as an act of love. When their movements were repressed and their ideas were co-opted, marginalized, and commercialized at the end of the Sixties, the liberating hope of love often turned into a sense of despair.
OVERCOMING HUNGER AND RURAL POVERTY BRAZILIAN EXPERIENCES
Brazil has a long tradition of public policies and efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty. The right to food is enshrined in Amendment No. 64/2010 of Brazil’s Constitution as an obligation of the State, and the country has a very progressive food security law that institutionalizes the policy and lays the foundations for broad-based social participation in priority setting, expressed in the National Council on Food and Nutrition Security (CONSEA). It was this wealth of experience (reflected in programmes and plans such as Zero Hunger, Bolsa Família and Brazil Without Extreme Poverty, applied nationwide from 2003 to 2013), together with other factors, that took the country off the Hunger Map in 2014. This report is designed to update the information and describe concrete Brazilian initiatives to facilitate South-South cooperation to a wider audience, including policymakers working to improve food security and fight poverty.
