C.s. Lewis at Poets' Corner

On the fiftieth anniversary of his death, C. S. Lewis was memorialized in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, taking his place beside the greatest names in English literature. Oxford and Cambridge Universities, where Lewis taught, also held commemorations. This volume gathers together addresses from those events. Rowan Williams and Alister McGrath assess Lewis's legacy in theology, Malcolm Guite addresses his integration of reason and imagination, William Lane Craig takes a philosophical perspective, while Lewis's successor as Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English, Helen Cooper, considers him as a critic. The collection also includes more personal and creative responses: Walter Hooper,...

For me, Iraq didn't have many gunfights or arm bars. No pillage or rape. No elation for freed Iraqis or empathy when its dictator swung from a hangman's noose. I was angered by having had to go and wanted to crack the world open and pour out her rotten core. The Why of War chronicles fifteen years of my U.S. cavalry scout career. From introduction to conclusion, from stroke to mass shootings, this story is guaranteed to be seared into your memory. Now that the story has been written and has flowed to its truth, I realize it encompasses so much more than a question or a collection of memories. It serves as a bullhorn for other veterans to use to tell their stories. I am confident, I wasn't the only one asking why we invaded Iraq while I was there. Civilian readers may gain a better understanding when thanking a veteran for their service. In many ways, the story serves as a reminder that no matter where we find ourselves and in what condition to which we have fallen, we can be better. We owe that to our fallen soldiers. Welcome to my why of war. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to help veterans.

This book is the first thorough analysis of the whole of Lewis' fiction to show it has behind it a considerable sophistication of literary technique and patterning. The works discussed include THE PILGRIMS REGRESS, THE RANSON TRILOGY, THE GREAT DIVORCE, the NARNIA books and TILL WE HAVE FACES. -.-.- "This is a positively brilliant book, written with splendor, elegance, profundity and evidencing an enormous amount of learning. This is probably not a book to give a first-time reader of Lewis. But for those who are more broadly read in the Lewis corpus this book is an absolute gold mine of information. The author gives us a magnificent overview of Lewis' many writings, tracing for us thoughts and ideas which recur throughout, and at the same time telling us how each book differs from the others. I think it is not extravagant to call C. S. Lewis: His Literary Achievement a tour de force." - Robert Merchant, St. Austin Review, Book Review Editor
