Since 1979 Ars Electronica has tracked and analyzed the digital revolution and its multiple impacts. The focus has always been on processes and trends combining art, technology, and society. Results of this artistic and scientific research can be seen in the form of an annual festival in Linz, Austria, where a five-day-long program involves conferences, podium discussions, workshops, exhibitions, performances, interventions, and concerts. The festival is planned, organized, and executed in collaboration with artists and scientists from around the world. A variety of controversial futuristic themes are always the center of attention. The symposium Expanded Animation was initiated in 2013 and offered a first approach to the expanded field of computer animation. In the meantime, it has become an established part of the Ars Electronica Animation Festival and the international competition Prix Ars Electronica Computer Animation. Every year under an overarching theme, the symposium has researched the field of technology and art, animation and aesthetics, investigated the collapsing boundaries in digital animation and explored positions and future trends. Much like the first conferences on computer animation at Ars Electronica in the 1980s, practice and theory are equally important. The richly illustrated publication Expanded Animation. The Anthology features contributions from speakers and artist positions from the past five years and presents an overview of the prize winners in Computer Animation.
In light of current discourses on AI and robotics, what do the various experiences of art contribute to the rethinking of technology today? Art and Cosmotechnics addresses the challenge of technology to the existence of art and traditional thought, especially in light of current discourses on artificial intelligence and robotics. It carries out an attempt on the cosmotechnics of Chinese landscape painting in order to address this question, and further asks: What is the significance of shanshui (mountain and water) in face of the new challenges brought about by the current technological transformation? Thinking art and cosmotechnics together is an attempt to look into the varieties of experiences of art and to ask what these experiences might contribute to the rethinking of technology today.

In recent decades, new endogenous growth theory has become popular but the ideas are not new. They go back at least as far as Adam Smith, and the subsequent contributions made notably by Alfred Marshall and Allyn Young. This book critically discusses and provides an historical perspective to the entire spectrum of endogenous growth theories starting with Adam Smith and ending with Paul Romer. It fills an important gap in the literature. While contributions of individual authors are readily available, there is no comprehensive study on the subject covering such a vast ground, critically discussing these authors in a comprehensive framework. It collates all the arguments and economic viewpoints in one collection, providing both the seasoned economist and a graduate economist with a critical comparison of origin, mechanisms, conclusions, and policy implications of these models.
Human capital is of utmost importance for the future of our knowledge economies and societies. However, it is unequally distributed in Europe, contributing to marked spatial patterns of economic prosperity within and across countries. In many cases, these patterns have a long history. To understand them better, it requires to go back in time, when mass schooling was starting to become a reality across Europe. Taking a long-run perspective over more than 150 years, this book shows the development and the distribution of human capital in the regions of Europe and its connections with the economy. It provides insights into recent research findings in this area, including theoretical advances and the use of new empirical data.

Where are all of the women in the avant-garde electronic music scene? Anyone who thinks they do not exist is totally wrong. It is, however, a fact that hardly anyone has done any research on them or written about them. Wondering about a world allegedly lacking in female electronic musicians, Elisabeth Schimana began a search in the late 1990s and the initial results of her research went into her performance Portrait 01 - Die Futuristin (Portrait 01 - the female futurists). Her research brought her into the sphere of electronic music, which culminated in the founding of the IMA- Institute for Media Archaeology. Now, this publication presents twenty female artists and their work. The artists create a somewhat different picture of the creation and development of electronic music. This illustrated volume is as intriguing as it is fascinating, and, above all, a significant portrait of this new history.
