The aim of this Book is to give an overview, based on the results of nearly three decades of intensive research, of transient chaos. One belief that motivates us to write this book is that, transient chaos may not have been appreciated even within the nonlinear-science community, let alone other scientific disciplines.

The specter of the apocalypse has always been a semiotic fantasy: only at the end of all things will their true meaning be revealed. Our long romance with catastrophe is inseparable from the Western hermeneutical tradition: our search for an elusive truth, one that can only be uncovered through the interminable work of interpretation. Catastrophe terrifies and tantalizes to the extent it promises an end to this task. 9/11 is this book’s beginning, but not its end. Here, it seemed, was the apocalypse America had long been waiting for; until it became just another event. This book is a collection of papers contributed by some of the greatest names in the areas of chaos and nonlinear dynamics. Each paper examines a research topic at the frontier of the area of dynamical systems. As well as reviewing recent results, each paper also discusses the future perspectives of each topic. The result is an invaluable snapshot of the state of the ?eld by some of the most important researchers in the area. The ?rst contribution in this book (the section entitled “How did you get into Chaos?”) is actually not a paper, but a collection of personal accounts by a number of participants of the conference held in Aberdeen in September 2007 to honour Celso Grebogi’s 60th birthday. At the instigation of James Yorke, many of the most well-known scientists in the area agreed to share their tales on how they got involved in chaos during a celebratory dinner in Celso’s honour during the conference. This was recorded in video, we felt that these accounts were a valuable historic document for the ?eld. So we decided to transcribe it and include it here as the ?rst section of the book.

The history of spin in general, and of the nucleon spin structure in particular, has been full of surprises. For the past 25 years deep inelastic lepton scattering has been studied to determine the carriers of the nucleon spin. However, it was realized only recently that a full understanding of the nucleon spin will also require detailed information on the helicity structure in the resonance region, i.e. in the realm of nonperturbative QCD.This volume gives a status report on the spin structure in the nucleon resonance region, focusing on: new experimental results from SLAC and HERMES; a first glance at the JLab experiments to map out the spin structure functions at low and intermediate four-momentum transfers; the pioneering experiment at MAMI (Mainz) to determine the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for real photons; and recent theoretical concepts and investigations to describe the spin structure in the frameworks of higher twist expansion, phenomenological models and chiral perturbation theory.
