The Origin and Development of the Bengali Language

First published in 1972, The Origin and Development of the Bengali Language (Vol. 3) is the updated supplement to the two-volume The Origin and Development of the Bengali Language. It contains certain additions and corrections to the first systematic and detailed history of a Modern Indo-Aryan Language written by an Indian, and incidentally, as it is comparative in its treatment, taking into consideration facts in other Indo-Aryan speeches, it is an invaluable contribution to the scientific study of the Modern Indo-Aryan languages as a whole. This book will be of interest to students of language, linguistics and South Asian studies.

A World Art History and Its Objects

A World Art History and Its Objects

  • Categories: Art

Is writing a world art history possible? Does the history of art as such even exist outside the Western tradition? Is it possible to consider the history of art in a way that is not fundamentally Eurocentric? In this highly readable and provocative book, David Carrier, a philosopher and art historian, does not attempt to write a world art history himself. Rather, he asks the question of how an art history of all cultures could be written—or whether it is even possible to do so. He also engages the political and moral issues raised by the idea of a multicultural art history. Focusing on a consideration of intersecting artistic traditions, Carrier negotiates the way meaning and understanding shift or are altered when a visual object from one culture, for example, is inserted into the visual tradition of another culture. A World Art History and Its Objects proposes the use of temporal narrative as a way to begin to understand a multicultural art history.

Building for South Asia

Architect Polk Believes That Words About Buildings Are Always Secondary To The Buildings Themselves. In Architectural Presentation, Buildings Themselves Are The Central Facts, And He Sees That This Is True In His Own Architectural Autobiography.Nevertheless, Alongwith The Many Plates That Some Measure Illustrate This Work, Polk Has Included Observations On Diverse And Unreconciled Situations That Help Explain The Special Cases Of The Artistry Of Space, Structure, And Form In His Designs. He Never Handed Down Abstract Form, And He Would Say That The Words Of His Book-Or Indeed Any Critique-Do Not Alter The Buildings. They Are Neither More Nor Less Because Of The Written Word. All The Buildings In This Architectural Autobiography Are Polk S Personal Designs And Belong To His Practice In South Asia, 1952-1964.

Canons and Values

  • Categories: Art

A critical rethinking of the way canons are defined, constructed, dismantled, and revised. A century ago, all art was evaluated through the lens of European classicism and its tradition. This volume explores and questions the foundations of the European canon, offers a critical rethinking of ancient and classical art, and interrogates the canons of cultures and regions that have often been left at the margins of art history. It underscores the historical and geographical diversity of canons and the local values underlying them. Twelve international scholars consider how canons are constructed and contested, focusing on the relationship between canonical objects and the value systems that sha...
