Analysis of biological processes

The main concern of the book is analysis of biological processes, the final stage of which is mathematical modeling, i.e. quantitative presentation of the processes in rigorous mathematical terms. It is designated for non-mathematicians. Mathematical models can be compared with experimental data thus verifying the validity of the models and finally of the initial assumptions and verbal descriptions of the processes. The models (usually in the form of mathematical equations) are achieved painlessly via the schemes summarising verbal description of what is known concerning the processes. To solve the equations computer software is used. The step-by-step analysis leads to quite sophisticated models some of them being original. The book helps the reader to develop more general approach to the problems. It may be useful for experienced readers as well.

Frontiers in Natural Product Chemistry: Volume 7

Frontiers in Natural Product Chemistry is a book series devoted to publishing monographs that highlight important advances in natural product chemistry. The series covers all aspects of research in the chemistry and biochemistry of naturally occurring compounds, including research on natural substances derived from plants, microbes and animals. Reviews of structure elucidation, biological activity, organic and experimental synthesis of natural products as well as developments of new methods are also included in the series. Volume seven of the series brings seven reviews covering these topics: - Plant-Derived Anticancer Compounds Used in Cancer Therapies - Pradimicin and Benanomicin Antibiotics - The Chemical Compositions of Bixa orellana and their Pharmacological Activities - Overview of Phytochemistry and Pharmacology of Nilakanthi (Ajuga bracteosa Wall. ex Benth.) - Tetracyclic benzocarbazoles and derivatives - Chalcones as Antiinflammatory, Antidiabetic, and Antidepressant Agents - Bioactive Steroids from Marine Organisms

The aim of the book is to assist both local and international scholars in articulating the scholarly discourse on indigenous health attitudes, practices, and experiences. The indigenous lens that was used to generate and disseminate indigenous knowledge in this book will strengthen indigenous scholarship, thus making it accessible to a wider audience. In addition, the information shared in this book will add value for scholars and assist them with the indigenous knowledge needed to address sustainable development goals. This book is timeous and topical as the discourse on the decolonisation of the curriculum is widely debated in the higher education space. The discourse on the scholarship of...

Fighting Multidrug Resistance with Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils and Their Components

Fighting Multidrug Resistance with Herbal Extracts, Essential Oils and their Components offers scientists a single source aimed at fighting specific multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms such as bacteria, protozoans, viruses and fungi using natural products. This essential reference discusses herbal extracts and essential oils used or under investigation to treat MDR infections, as well as those containing antimicrobial activity that could be of potential interest in future studies against MDR microorganisms. The need to combat multidrug-resistant microorganisms is an urgent one and this book provides important coverage of mechanism of action, the advantages and disadvantages of using her...

Intracellular Signaling Mediators in the Circulatory and Ventilatory Systems

The volumes in this authoritative series present a multidisciplinary approach to modeling and simulation of flows in the cardiovascular and ventilatory systems, especially multiscale modeling and coupled simulations. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are tightly coupled, as their primary function is to supply oxygen to and remove carbon dioxide from the body's cells. Because physiological conduits have deformable and reactive walls, macroscopic flow behavior and prediction must be coupled to phenomenological models of nano- and microscopic events in a corrector scheme of regulated mechanisms when the vessel lumen caliber varies markedly. Therefore, investigation of flows of blood an...
