This is a most unusual book. For several decades Xi Xi has been widely known for her award-winning poetry and fiction. This time, she has chosen to write about the teddy bears she began making in 2005, after treatment for cancer, in order to improve the mobility of her right hand. She made the bears herself from scratch, choosing some of her favourite characters from history and legend such as the Taoist philosopher Master Zhuang, the Mongol ruler Genghis Khan, and Beauty and the Beast. She also created exquisite items of clothing for them and wove a series of delightfully witty essays around them, giving her readers fascinating insights into Chinese culture, and into the ways in which Chinese clothing and fashion have evolved through the ages. This is a book for all who love literature and teddy bears.

Everything Teddy has ever wanted is right in front of him, if only he can find the courage to reach out and take it. Teddy should really know better than to agree to one of Pierce's "great ideas," but he's never found it easy to say no to his best friend. Which is why he finds himself on the middle of a snow-covered road, heading into the mountains to spend the Christmas holiday in a rental cabin. And, like always, Pierce's great plan backfires. The cabin is a dump, it's freezing outside — and then comes the snowstorm. Pierce isn't sure how he's going to handle an entire weekend trapped with Teddy. Sure, the guy is his best friend, but tell that to Pierce's body. It's getting harder and hard to keep his hands to himself. Teddy doesn't think Pierce is interested in his nerdy best friend. Pierce doesn't think he's good enough for Teddy. But the fire's blazing, the wind is howling, and it's time for some changes.
Illustrations and simple text encourage young readers to find the teddy hiding in various places in the house. On board pages.
Many years ago, I was confronted with horrible news that my best friend in the whole world was gone. My best friend's name was Teddy and he was a beautiful Akita, he was loving, gentle and simply put, my BIG baby! Up until a year ago, I still could not bring myself to look at his pictures without sobbing. I have lost pets in the past, but he held a very special place in my heart that I just can't explain. I decided last year that it was time, I thought to try to deal with the grief and do something to help remember the good times and hopefully make me smile. I decided to try to sum up our short life together in words and of course to bring some of the best memories to life. I inevitably came up with Teddy's Place. An illustrated account of my best friend, and a mean's to try to make sense of losing him.
