Povestirile lui Ștefan Agopian, care îi au în prim-plan pe Ioan și Zadic, se leagă într-un „altfel de roman“. Zadic spune că a fost în multe călătorii și a văzut tot felul de lucruri, iar Ioan visează mereu să ajungă în Englitera. Cei doi ajung pe meleaguri de basm, unde întâlnesc personaje neverosimile, dar fascinante, precum dulăul Magog, cacodemoni, stimfalide, păsăroiul Ulise sau porumbelul Evripil, și au parte de întâmplări din cele mai stranii. Scris pe un ritm domol, cu un aer de tristețe ascunsă, Manualul întâmplărilor ne poartă într-un univers paralel, himeric, în care totul pare posibil.
