Este livro é um estudo sobre o trabalho temporário no corte de cana, o adoecimento e as políticas de proteção social. Analisa o caso dos camponeses do município de Elesbão Veloso, no Estado do Piauí, que devido às condições insuficientes de reprodução, precisam migrar para cortar cana nos Estados da Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais e São Paulo. É uma pesquisa primorosa fundamentada na observação direta dos espaços dos trabalhadores e suas famílias e entrevistas com médicos, lideranças comunitárias e gestores públicos municipais. Utiliza amplo material empírico e teórico para demonstrar as consequências das condições degradantes de trabalho sobre a saúde dos trabalhadores nas usinas de cana de açúcar. Ao adoecerem, nem as usinas e nem o Estado fornece a assistência médica necessária, recaindo sobre os ombros da família os cuidados e amparo material e afetivo.
