Identity, Islam and the Twilight of Liberal Values
Since its publication in 1992, an array of commentators have criticised Francis Fukuyama’s optimism in The End of History and the Last Man for supposing that liberal democracy is the one political model with sufficient moral and practical resilience to endure through the vicissitudes of future historical events. In hindsight, it seems Fukuyama underestimated liberal democracy’s ethno-religious rivals, and religious fundamentalism’s powerfully resistant bulwark against liberal democracy. This book offers a trenchant analysis of the post-millennial cultural shift away from the defining liberal social values of the post-war and post-colonial global revolutionary movements. It dissects the incoherent reasoning by which the liberal values of racial equality, tolerance, diversity, feminism, and gender have been evacuated of their past meanings and put into the service of a reactionary politics that uses superficially plausible bait to sell the same regressive ideology that religious social conservatives have been peddling for decades.
Feminist Film Studies

Studying Feminist Film Theory
This book is aimed at helping media and film studies teachers introduce the basics of feminist film theory. No prior knowledge of feminist theory is required, the intended readers being university undergraduate teachers and students of film and media studies. Areas of emphasis include spectatorship, narrative, and ideology. Many illustrative case studies from popular cinema are used to offer students an opportunity to consider the connotations of visual and aural elements of film, narrative conflicts and oppositions, the implications of spectator “positioning” and viewer identification, and an ideological critical approach to film. Explanations of key terminology are included, along with classroom exercises and practice questions. Each chapter begins with key definitions and explanations of the concepts to be studied, including some historical background where relevant. Case studies include film noir, Kathryn Bigelow’s Strange Days and the work of directors Spike Lee, Claire Denis, and Paul Verhoeven. Studying Feminist Film Theory is a revised and expanded version of Feminist Film Studies: A Teacher’s Guide, published by Auteur in 2007.

First published in 1986. Forty five percent of black women have at least one child by the time they are turn twenty compared to 19 percent of white women. Eight-six percent of the births to black teens occurred to unmarried mothers compared to 30 percent among whites. Research shows that teenage childbearing has negative medical, social, and economic consequences and that women who first gave birth as teenagers are more likely to raise their families in poverty. In Choice and Circumstance the authors explore tree factors underlying the racial differences in the incidence of early childbearing; information about sex, pregnancy and contraception; need for family planning and abortion services; and motivation for postponing parenthood, including aspirations for schooling, employment plans and desire for children within marriage. They consider which teens postpone sex and pregnancy and why, and whether the kinds of motivation necessary to prevent early pregnancy vary by race in the United Sates, perhaps explaining the race differences in early childbearing.
