MMA (“Mixed Martial Arts”, ou “Artes Marciais Mistas”) é um esporte de combate, no qual é utilizada uma grande variedade de técnicas. O moderno MMA surgiu como fenômeno popular em 1993, com o Ultimate Fighting Championship, evento cuja idéia principal era colocar frente a frente diversos estilos e técnicas oriundos de diversas artes marciais, como por exemplo Boxe, Jiu-Jítsu, Karatê, Judô, Muay Thai e outras, com a menor quantidade possível de regras e limitações, objetivando verificar qual arte marcial seria mais efetiva em uma situação de combate real. Entre o final da década de 1990 e início dos anos 2000, foram implementadas regras adicionais nos eventos de MMA, objetivando proporcionar maior segurança dos atletas, bem como maior aceitação destas competições no meio desportivo, ainda assim procurando manter o conceito original, sem muitas regras e limitações. O objetivo proposto foi alcançado, pois desde a implementação das novas regras, o esporte cresceu muito rapidamente, ao ponto de bater recordes de audiência em transmissões em televisão a cabo pay-per-view.
