New Perspectives on Religious and Spiritual Education

Society is a complex phenomenon, characterized by constant change, often entailing conflict. This is seen in our own times where philosophies and movements of individualism, pluralism and globalization intersect and often collide. Still, even in this fast-moving and highly materialist world, religion and spirituality remain crucial aspects of human and social living, and therefore must be among the many focusses of the modern school. Teachers of Religious and Spiritual Education (RSE) are therefore expected to support students’ religious and spiritual understanding as well as their overall development. How can they best meet this challenge? This book is comprised of various interdisciplina...

Religious Ideas, Feelings and Their Interrelationship

Religious education seeks to help students acquire religious ideas by interpreting religious and other stories in accordance with their life world. Schools pursue this goal by organising religious learning activities. The question is whether the acquisition of religious ideas is possible for young students, considering the difficulties such as the complex and not readily understandable religious stories, and social developments as de-institutionalisation, de-traditionalisation and pluralisation? What are the possibilities for primary schools of teaching their students knowledge about religious ideas? What is the influence of feelings on the acquisition? What possibilities in the form of learning arrangements can be created for primary school students, with their diverse religious backgrounds, to acquire religious ideas optimally? That is the cardinal problem explored in this study.

International Research Handbook on Values Education and Student Wellbeing

Informed by the most up-to-date research from around the world, as well as examples of good practice, this handbook analyzes values education in the context of a range of school-based measures associated with student wellbeing. These include social, emotional, moral and spiritual growth – elements that seem to be present where intellectual advancement and academic achievement are being maximized. This text comes as ‘values education’ widens in scope from being concerned with morality, ethics, civics and citizenship to a broader definition synonymous with a holistic approach to education in general. This expanded purview is frequently described as pedagogy relating to ‘values’ and ...

Learning to Deliberate in Religious Education

Religious and moral pluralism is intrinsic to present-day society. Pluralism includes both the diversity of religions and worldviews (external pluralism), and the diverse conceptions of a transcendent reality and a good life within religions (internal pluralism). This book deals with the challenges this pluralism poses for Christian adult education. The goal is to form a clearer picture of how educators deal with pluralism in their practice. The premise is that this is particularly evident in the goal orientations and the educational methods they choose. This book presents a typology of religio-moral education which is empirically tested in the Catholic context in the Netherlands. It explores the goal orientations and methods of religious and moral educators, and examines the crucial relation between them. The educator's choices are also evaluated in the light of a considered approach to pluralism. Isolde Driesen (1971) worked as a junior researcher at the Faculty of Theology of the Radboud University Nijmegen on the research-project Pluralism and Christian adult education.
