"This is not a collection catalogue of the conventional type, but rather a narrative in which artists represented in the collection have their say. The book combines illustrations of works of art with the artists' own words. It is thus not only historical, but also "contemporary," inasmuch as the artists' statements accord thm a presence in the here and now."--Page 8.

Recent upheavals and rapid changes in Eastern Europe have clearly left their mark on Monika Sosnowska's work. The traces of bygone utopias and recent cultural fissures in cities like Warsaw have proven a fertile ground for the materials from which the sculptor formulates her walk-in installations--as seen in recent exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and at London's Serpentine Gallery. The digital photographs and sketches included in this book offer a selection of the impressions, ideas and notes which have influenced Sosnowska's spatial compositions. They offer fascinating insight into the ways in which the artist perceives her surroundings and conveys that perception in her sculptures. Monika Sosnowska was born in Ryki, Poland, in 1972. Since completing her studies in Amsterdam, she has been living in Warsaw. Her work has been exhibited at major international institutions, including the 52nd Venice Biennale, where she represented Poland in 2007.

Roth Time

Sculptor, poet, diarist, graphic designer, pioneer artist's book maker, performer, publisher, musician, and, most of all, provocateur, Dieter Roth has long been beloved as an artist's artist. Known for his mistrust of all art institutions and commercial galleries--he once referred to museums as funeral homes--he was also known for his generosity to friends, his collaborative spirit, and for including his family in his art making. Much to the frustration of any gallery that tried to exhibit his work (supposedly none more than once), Roth thumbed his nose at those who valued high purpose and permanence in art. Constantly trying to undo his art education, he would set up systems that discourage...

The American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976) and Swiss artists Peter Fischli (1952- ) and David Weiss (1946-2012) have sought and found quintessential ways of rendering a moment of fragile balance in art--a temporary state at once precarious and propitious. With Calder's groundbreaking invention of the mobile in the early nineteen thirties, and Fischli/Weiss's collaborative creative work from 1979 onwards, these artists each lent the theme of fragile balance an iconic form of a very different kind. At first glance, both positions could hardly be more different; later, however, they proved to be two sides of the same coin, the result of different perspectives on the same theme at different times. The elaborately designed, richly illustrated catalogue with accompanying essays provides extensive insight into both oeuvres. Exhibition: Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, Switzerland (29.05-04.09.2016).

The Fondation Beyeler begins its fall exhibition season in 2019 with five women artists. Instead of a comprehensive group show with numerous works, the art of Leonor Antunes, Silvia Bächli, Toba Khedoori, Susan Philipsz, and Rachel Whiteread provide insight into various approaches to the space. The works of these artists create a specific sense of space-acoustically, as sculpture, or in drawings. In their appearance and presence, the works seem restrained and unobtrusive, but their effect is nevertheless strong and powerful. These works of art evoke spaces that lie somewhere in between the recognizable and the ephemeral. They create places and respites in which the faculty of memory is trig...
