During the Renaissance, artists and illustrators developed the representation of truthful three-dimensional forms into a highly skilled art. As reliable illustrations of three-dimensional subjects became more prevalent, they also influenced the ways in which disciplines developed: architecture could be communicated much more clearly, mathematical concepts and astronomical observations could be quickly relayed, and observations of the natural world moved towards a more realistic method of depiction. Through essays on some of the world's greatest artists and thinkers--such as Leonardo da Vinci, Luca Pacioli, Andreas Vesalius, Johann Kepler, Galileo Galilei, William Hunter, and many more--this ...

Good Thinking

These sparkling essays by a gifted thinker offer philosophical views on the roots of statistical interference. A pioneer in the early development of computing, Irving J. Good made fundamental contributions to the theory of Bayesian inference and was a key member of the team that broke the German Enigma code during World War II. Good maintains that a grasp of probability is essential to answering both practical and philosophical questions. This compilation of his most accessible works concentrates on philosophical rather than mathematical subjects, ranging from rational decisions, randomness, and the nature of probability to operational research, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology,...

How can Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu prompt us to re-imagine the cinema? Although no-one goes to the cinema in the novel, and its narrator is critical of a 'merely' cinematographic account of reality, the proposition of Thinking Cinema with Proust is that the Recherche can provide a powerful catalyst for re-thinking the cinema, and that the 'structural absence' of cinema from Proust's novel is rich in implications. Drawing on a complex terrain of intersections and overlaps between the experience of the spectator and that of Proust's narrator and reader, the book is focused around a series of motifs - reverie, the camera obscura, the magic lantern, projection, gesture and 'screen memory' - which enable a fluid movement back and forth between Proust and film theory. Patrick ffrench is Professor of French at King's College London.
