Climate change, financial crises, and other issues of global scale no longer concern only the developed world. The binding power of globalization has placed these challenges at the doorstep of almost every country, testing the evolutionary capacity of monolithic governance systems bound by institutional legacy and administrative stagnation. This book locates the concept of adaptive governance, used primarily in environmental management, within the context of economic policy. Introducing flexible economic opportunism, it argues that a particular style of institutional and administrative versatility enables innovative, evidence-based policy development. This book mines institutional economics,...

Biology of Rotifers

Since the two previous rotifer symposia in Lunz and Gent were highly successful, it was considered important to continue the tradition every third year. Thus a third rotifer symposium was held in Uppsala, Sweden, Aug. 30-Sept. 4, 1982. In the beginning of 1981 the first circular was mailed to the participants of the previous symposia, who in turn were requested to suggest names of other scientists to be invited. As a result many people expressed interest, about 70 of whom finally participated in the symposium (not including temporary visitors from nearby). The participants represented 22 countries, in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. As with the earlier symposia, some subjects were...

Progress in Standardization of Aquatic Toxicity Tests provides a critical evaluation of the level of standardization achieved by freshwater and marine ecotoxicity tests used to evaluate potential risk of new chemicals and wastewater effluents. Tests at the sub-cellular, individual, laboratory microcosm, and ecosystem levels are presented and critically evaluated. The influence of environmental and genetic heterogeneity on test standardization is also discussed. The book will be an excellent reference for industry professionals, consultants, regulatory officials, and students working in the ecotoxicology field.
