The terms »mind« and »matter« appear to signify two concepts irreplaceable and permanent in nature. The increasing challenges and modes of reflection of digital life and cultural creation have contributed to a productive doubting of said dichotomy. Net culture has exposed the causality of the two only superficially contradictory systems and translated these into new technological realities. Operative fiction: New narrative strategies With Fiction Fiction, visual artist Elena Peytchinska and poet Thomas Ballhausen are continuing their linguistic/artistic exploration of space and language, as well as with the intertwining of drawing and literature. Based on the findings in FAUNA (2018), the visual artist Elena Peytchinska and the poet Thomas Ballhausen, in FLORA, continue their discourse on contemporary information and its theorization. Peytchinska’s plant diagrams and Ballhausen’s literary texts create a "texture" – not only of landscapes of information and the way in which they are ordered, but also of the dialogic practice of the linguistic art made readable. In the book, which is both object and place at the same time, geometric and topological strategies are combined to produce novel spatial mentation. FLORA maps these spaces and explores the networked territories with the aesthetic and scientific means of linguistic art.

Existing critical traditions fail to fully account for the impact of Austrian director, and 2009 Cannes Palm d'Or winner, Michael Haneke's films, situated as they are between intellectual projects and popular entertainments. In this first English-language introduction to, and critical analysis of, his work, each of Haneke's eight feature films are considered in detail. Particular attention is given to what the author terms Michael Haneke's 'ethical cinema' and the unique impact of these films upon their audiences. Drawing on the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant and Stanley Cavell, Catherine Wheatley, introduces a new way of marrying film and moral philosophy, which explicitly examines the ethics of the film viewing experience. Haneke's films offer the viewer great freedom whilst simultaneously imposing a considerable burden of responsibility. How Haneke achieves this break with more conventional spectatorship models, and what its far-reaching implications are for film theory in general, constitute the principal subject of this book.

Referencing the animal kingdom, Ballhausen’s twelve literary texts create an imaginary zoological scenario. Based on Stomachion, the 14-part mathematical mind game, Peytchinska’s digital drawings develop a network – a theoretical animal (Origamion) that moves through the book space with the folding action. Its lines, which should be understood as boundary as well as an extension of language, interweave with the text as they move through the book. Literature and drawing enter into a dialog – an atlas of language art manifests in the form of a new order. In this way, FAUNA can be experienced as a thinking space that is to be opened – without however interfering with the readability of this artistic enterprise; drawings and text meet as actors on the stage of the book space.

During the 1930s, Austrian film production companies developed a process to navigate the competing demands of audiences in Nazi Germany and those found in broader Western markets. In Screening Transcendence, film historian Robert Dassanowsky explores how Austrian filmmakers during the Austrofascist period (1933–1938) developed two overlapping industries: "Aryanized" films for distribution in Germany, its largest market, and "Emigrantenfilm," which employed émigré and Jewish talent that appealed to international audiences.
