The Secession Talks is a collection of artist talks on exhibitions that took place at the Secession from 2011 to 2022. They contextualize the exhibition history of the Secession and allow for a new consideration and evaluation of the program. As a collection, these conversations between artists and well-known art critics, art historians, curators, and artist colleagues form a unique interface between artistic work and art education.
During the first half of the twentieth century, a group of collectors and creators dedicated themselves to documenting the history of African American life. At a time when dominant institutions cast doubt on the value or even the idea of Black history, these bibliophiles, scrapbookers, and librarians created an enduring set of African diasporic archives. Transferring what has been rejected from everyday life or urban space into art and thus supplying it with a new usefulness, is one of Theaster Gates? fundamental artistic strategies. The sculptures and often spatially invasive works for Kunsthaus Bregenz, some of them new, follow this position. A selection of the collection that Gates calls 'Negrobilia', which has been compiled over the years by Edward J. and Ana J. Williams with the intention of removing these objects from the market and matter of-course visibility, is shown for the first time Contributions by Romi Crawford and Jackie Stewart broach Gates? complex Black Archive, as a critical confrontation with social and political themes. Thomas D. Trummer examines the artistic concept that underlies the exhibition in Bregenz. Large-format illustrations of earlier work and in particular the new works realized for Bregenz, as well as a carefully compiled biography and bibliography, offer a comprehensive insight into the work of the American artist. In the context of current debates on artistic methods of inquiry, the project 'AR - Artistic Research' aimed to take up visionary artist, designer, and MIT professor György Kepes's call for art on a civic scale, which appraises the specific potential of artistic examination and intervention in the urban environment. For the first time since 1990, the Kunsthaus Bregenz has exhibited approximately 60 drawings by Richard Serra in a comprehensive presentation of the sculptor's graphic oeuvre. This catalogue, published in conjunction with this historically important exhibition was produced in close cooperation with Richard Serra and presents six work series from nearly two decades of his artistic practice. It contains high-quality, large-format reproductions of all the drawings in this exhibition, in part as foldouts. As a special highlight the large-format Diptychs (1989) were juxtaposed against the artist's most recent work series Solids (2007/08). The work Forged Drawing, which was recently reworked especially for the Kunsthaus Bregenz, as well as the work series Weight and Measure, Rounds, and out-of-rounds all combine to convey the independent power and artistic significance of Richard Serra's graphic work. James Lawrence and Richard Shiff, two art historians and Serra specialists, contribute knowledgeable essays on Serra's graphic work, which is certainly on a par with his sculptures.
