Happiness, Well-being and the Meaning of Life

The rapid cultural changes which are so characteristic for our time, have had a far reaching effect not only on the universal human research for happiness, well-being and a meaningful existence in our world, but also on the way in which these concepts are understood and misunderstood in contemporary culture. For religious believers their faith determines the ideals of happiness, well-being and meaningfulness which they strive to attain in their lives. But are these ideals timelessly the same for all time and for all people or are they too subject to historical change and cultural variation ? Social scientists examine the way in which these ideals are culturally pluriform and subject to empir...

Jesus: the Prototokos

Jesus Christ tells us what the Gospel is in Mark 16:16 (KJV). The Gospel is He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. (Mark 16:16) Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. (John 14:6) The Gospel is the way, the truth and the life. The Gospel is Jesus. Jesus is the Gospel. Jesus is the Word (John 1:1). The Gospel is the Word (John 1:2). The Gospel is the word (John 12:48). Jesus is the prototokos: Jesus was born of the flesh at his natural birth; we are born of the flesh at our natural birth. Jesus was born again of the Spirit at his baptism by immersion; we are born again of the Spirit at our baptism by immersion. Jesus was raised from the dead at his baptism by immersion; we are raised from the dead at our baptism by immersion. Jesus was raised again after his second death; we shall be raised again after our second death.

Public theologies reflect on the contextuality of the Christian religion. Much of this contextuality is dependent on place: place as the culture and the society in which religions are situated, place as the position from where a theologian speaks, place as the biographical contingencies that shape people's lives. Moreover, public theologies ask for the contribution of Christian ethics to society, thereby shaping the social, cultural, and religious space to which they belong. The contributions in this volume analyse the categories of space and place in order to deepen the understanding of contextuality, thereby taking up some of the challenges presented by the so-called "spatial turn". Dr Thomas Wabel is Professor of Protestant Theology (Systematic Theology) at the University of Bamberg. Dr Katharina Eberlein-Braun is Assistant Professor of Protestant Theology (Systematic Theology) at the University of Bamberg. Torben Stamer is vicar of the Protestant Church of Northern Germany in Ludwigslust.

Music and Transcendence explores the ways in which music relates to transcendence by bringing together the disciplines of musicology, philosophy and theology, thereby uncovering congruencies between them that have often been obscured. Music has the capacity to take one outside of oneself and place one in relation to that which is ’other’. This ’other’ can be conceived in an ’absolute’ sense, insofar as music can be thought to place the self in relation to a divine ’other’ beyond the human frame of existence. However, the ’other’ can equally well be conceived in an ’immanent’ (or secular) sense, as music is a human activity that relates to other cultural practices. Music here places the self in relation to other people and to the world more generally, shaping how the world is understood, without any reference to a God or gods. The book examines how music has not only played a significant role in many philosophical and theological accounts of the nature of existence and the self, but also provides a valuable resource for the creation of meaning on a day-to-day basis.

The Oxford Handbook of Kierkegaard brings together some of the most distinguished contemporary contributors to Kierkegaard research together with some of the more gifted younger commentators on Kierkegaard's work. There is significant input from scholars based in Copenhagen's Søren Kierkegaard Research Centre, as well as from philosophers and theologians from Britain, Germany, and the United States. Part 1 presents some of the philological, historical, and contextual work that has been produced in recent years, establishing a firm basis for the more interpretative essays found in following parts. This includes looking at the history of his published and unpublished works, his cultural and s...
