Theology in the Service of the Church

This volume celebrates and extends a theme central to the work of Princeton Seminary President Thomas W. Gillespie -- the nature and role of Christian theology as servant of the church. Twenty-five contributing scholars approach this theme in strikingly original ways, offering diverse and ecumenically minded essays that make both a fitting tribute to Gillespie's legacy and a substantial contribution to theological inquiry in their own right.

A primary source account of slavery and the formation of the independent African American Episcopal Church in rural western Maryland, the original 1872 was recovered at the Howard University Spingarn Library by Jean Libby in 1977. The social history of Henry's life in slavery and freedom includes a letter from John Brown in 1859 as a "trusty man." He narrowly escaped arrest and fled north . Libby transcribed the narrative from nearly illegible type and documented and illustrated the events over a period of years that included specific university study at the University of California (B.A. 1986) and San Francisco State University (1991). First published by the University Press of Mississippi ...

General Editor Amy Black brings together five top-notch political theologians in the book, each representing one of the fiv...

Luke

While others might tell stories claiming the world is without promise, Luke presents the narrative of Jesus Christ as good news, challenge, and hope. For Luke, this is the only story that makes sense of the past, offers guidance for the present, and secures hope for the future. Interpretation Bible Studies (IBS) offers solid biblical content in a creative study format. Forged in the tradition of the celebrated Interpretation commentary series, IBS makes the same depth of biblical insight available in a dynamic, flexible, and user-friendly resource. Designed for adults and older youth, IBS can be used in small groups, in church school classes, in large group presentations, or in personal study.

The World Calling

Thomas Ogletree has devoted much of his career to exploring the significance of Ernst Troeltsch's seminal work, The Social Teaching of the Christian Churches. The articles in The World Calling use a Troeltschian lens to explore fundamental issues underlying any Christian social witness in the context of American democratic institutions.
