This is a qualitative study into the experiences of parents of disabled children in Iceland in the period 1974-2007. Hardly any formal support was available to these families in 1974.In 2007 the formal support system shaped by social and educational policy reflected almost "the state of the art". The study gives voice to the experiences of parents in seventy five extraordinary families in pursuit of ordinary lives. It explores their access to social capital and its impact. The findings resonate to some extent with less comprehensive studies in the Nordic countries, the Anglo-Saxon world and Northern Europe. The unique contribution of this book is that it specifically lifts the fathers' voices independently of the mothers'; it spans the period of 33 years when the welfare system and inclusive education was put in place; and it uses social capital theory in analysing support, concluding that social capital can be built as well as eroded or destroyed. The book speaks to the field of disability studies, human rights and policy workers and to parents, family and friends of disabled children everywhere.

Irony is a salient feature of common discourse and of some of contemporary art's more sophisticated representations. An intriguing characteristic of art and speech, irony's power and relevance reaches well beyond the enclaves of academic research and reflection. Translating irony involves a series of interpretative gestures which are not solely provoked by or confined to the act of translation as such. Even when one does not move between languages, reading irony always involves an act of interpretation which 'translates' a meaning out of a text that is not 'given'. Popular and multimodal forms of cultural products are becoming increasingly visible within translation studies research. What if meaning were the last thing that mattered in language? In this essay, Henri Meschonnic explains what it means to translate the sense of language and how to do it. In a radical stand against a hermeneutical approach based on the dualistic view of the linguistic sign and against its separation into a meaningful signified and a meaningless signifier, Henri Meschonnic argues for a poetics of translating. Because texts generate meaning through their power of expression, to translate ethically involves listening to the various rhythms that characterize them: prosodic, consonantal or vocalic patterns, syntactical structures, sentence length and punctuation, among other discursive means. However, as the book illustrates, such an endeavour goes against the grain and, more precisely, against a 2500-year-old tradition in the case of biblical translation. The inability of translators to give ear to rhythm in language results from a culturally transmitted deafness. Henri Meschonnic decries the generalized unwillingness to remedy this cultural condition and discusses the political implications for the subject of discourse.
