A central figure for anti-authoritarian Marxists and radicals who see the working class as an autonomous force, capable of acting independently and not simply reacting to the depredations of capitalism, Harry Cleaver brings this vision up to date, interpreting capitalism’s latest crises and demonstrating how ordinary people can, and do, rupture the smooth functioning of the system that exploits them.

Whether loving or hating it, many visualize capitalism as an unstoppable juggernaut. For those of us who would defeat it, we must identify its weaknesses. Fortunately, Marx and Engels’ writings on “crisis” reveal them. They show how its endless imposition of exploitative and alienating work creates such antagonistic conflicts everywhere as to make it, ultimately, a far more fragile monster than it first appears. Each of its efforts to shape social relationships, subordinating them to the work of commodity production and its control over society, has been and can be thrown into crisis by those of us resisting its way of life and seeking to create more appealing alternatives.

Deadly Waters

What are the lives of modern day pirates like outside of the attack skiffs? How do they spend their money? What clothes do they wear and what is their drug of choice? Deadly Waters takes us to the heart of Somalia, where Jay Bahadur, the intrepid twenty-five-year-old author has ventured where most journalists fear to tread. As the 'go to' journalist for all media, and with unparalleled access to all the major players, from government officials to local residents - and of course the pirates themselves - Bahadur sets out to discover who is behind the masked menaces who appear on the news. Exploring the politics and history of the self-governing region of Puntland, Bahadur looks at the challenges facing this troubled mini-state as piracy rises - and examines how the UN and other bodies are attempting to deal with the scourge of every sea-faring nation. Evocative and incisive, Deadly Waters is a highly original analysis of the international pirate crisis.

Overkill

  • Categories: Art

In 2000, a New York art collective invited friends and colleagues to create a group show of original art work based on a randomly chosen theme - for fun! It was a response to what they saw as the malaise of their generation. The reaction to this seemingly simple concept and its fresh sincerity was overwhelming. Several shows later, and with additional bases in Berlin and Tokyo, this collective of diverse talents (it takes its name from Le Phalanstere, Fournier's utopian vision of working life) has produced its first publication, Overkill. Its subject is the theme of the 2002 show in Berlin, but the book is far more than a catalogue. Instead it conveys Le Phalanstere's quirky approach and philosophy through a cornucopia of ideas, aesthetics, perspectives and misunderstandings. At first glance the book may seem chaotic and uncontrollable, but delve deeper and a dialogue emerges between the artists. It is the juxtaposition and convergence of their ideas that gives Overkill its energy."
