Copilots for Linguists
AI can assist the linguist in doing research on the structure of language. This Element illustrates this possibility by showing how a conversational AI based on a Large Language Model (AI LLM chatbot) can assist the Construction Grammarian, and especially the Frame Semanticist. An AI LLM chatbot is a text-generation system trained on vast amounts of text. To generate text, it must be able to find patterns in the data and mimic some linguistic capacity, at least in the eyes of a cooperative human user. The authors do not focus on whether AIs “understand” language. Rather, they investigate whether AI LLM chatbots are useful tools for linguists. They reframe the discussion from what AI LLM chatbots can do with language to what they can do for linguists. They find that a chatty LLM can labor usefully as an eliciting interlocutor, and present precise, scripted routines for prompting conversational LLMs.
Construction Grammar across Borders
Since its foundation in the 1980's, Construction Grammar has been crossing the traditionally imposed borders. From superimposed levels of analysis to the lexicon-grammar continuum, the constructionist approach to language has been built by, quoting Charles Fillmore, "the insistence on seeing specific grammatical patterns as serving given semantic (and often pragmatic) purposes, and in the effort to construct a uniform theory capable of presenting both the simplest and most general aspects of language and the large world of complex grammatical structures". In this volume, five chapters derived from the plenary talks at the 9th International Conference on Construction Grammar provide a sample of the bridges the insistence and effort of construction grammarians have built in the past three decades with other analytical models – namely Cognitive Grammar and Collostructional Analysis –, perspectives – Diachronic Construction Grammar – and applications – Language Pedagogy and Natural Language Understanding. Multiword expressions in lexical resources
This volume contains chapters that paint the current landscape of the multiword expressions (MWE) representation in lexical resources, in view of their robust identification and computational processing. Both large-size general lexica and smaller MWE-centred ones are included, with special focus on the representation decisions and mechanisms that facilitate their usage in Natural Language Processing tasks. The presentations go beyond the morpho-syntactic description of MWEs, into their semantics. One challenge in representing MWEs in lexical resources is ensuring that the variability along with extra features required by the different types of MWEs can be captured efficiently. In this respect, recommendations for representing MWEs in mono- and multilingual computational lexicons have been proposed; these focus mainly on the syntactic and semantic properties of support verbs and noun compounds and their proper encoding thereof.
Constructionalization and Constructional Changes
This book develops an approach to language change based on construction grammar in order to reconceptualize grammaticalization and lexicalization. In constructionist theory, a constructicon is an inventory of constructions making up the full set of linguistic units in a language. In applied practice, it is a set of construction descriptions – a “dictionary of constructions”. The development of constructicons in the latter sense typically means combining principles of both construction grammar and lexicography, and is probably best characterized as a blend between the two traditions.
