Demystifying Computation: A Hands-on Introduction

Problem solving in computing is referred to as computational thinking. The theory behind this concept is challenging in its technicalities, yet simple in its ideas. This book introduces the theory of computation from its inception to current form of complexity; from explanations of how the field of computer science was formed using classical ideas in mathematics by Gödel, to conceptualization of the Turing Machine, to its more recent innovations in quantum computation, hypercomputation, vague computing and natural computing. It describes the impact of these in relation to academia, business and wider society, providing a sound theoretical basis for its practical application.Written for accessibility, Demystifying Computation provides the basic knowledge needed for non-experts in the field, undergraduate computer scientists and students of information and communication technology and software development.

Randomness and Complexity

The book is a collection of papers written by a selection of eminent authors from around the world in honour of Gregory Chaitin''s 60th birthday. This is a unique volume including technical contributions, philosophical papers and essays. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: On Random and Hard-to-Describe Numbers (902 KB). Contents: On Random and Hard-to-Describe Numbers (C H Bennett); The Implications of a Cosmological Information Bound for Complexity, Quantum Information and the Nature of Physical Law (P C W Davies); What is a Computation? (M Davis); A Berry-Type Paradox (G Lolli); The Secret Number. An Exposition of Chaitin''s Theory (G Rozenberg & A Salomaa); Omega and the Time Evolution of the n-Body Problem (K Svozil); God''s Number: Where Can We Find the Secret of the Universe? In a Single Number! (M Chown); Omega Numbers (J-P Delahaye); Some Modern Perspectives on the Quest for Ultimate Knowledge (S Wolfram); An Enquiry Concerning Human (and Computer!) [Mathematical] Understanding (D Zeilberger); and other papers. Readership: Computer scientists and philosophers, both in academia and industry.

Imagination and Rigor

The aim of this volume of scientific essays is twofold. On the one hand, by remembering the scientific figure of Eduardo R. Caianiello, it aims at focusing on his outstanding contributions – from theoretical physics to cybernetics – which after so many years still represent occasion of innovative paths to be fruitfully followed. It must be stressed the contribution that his interdisciplinary methodology can still be of great help in affording and solving present day complex problems. On the other hand, it aims at pinpointing with the help of the scientists contributing to the volume – some crucial problems in present day research in the fields of interest of Eduardo Caianiello and which are still among the main lines of investigation of some of the Institutes founded by Eduardo (Istituto di Cibernetica del CNR, IIAS, etc).

I attended the Caltech Seminar Day on 16th May 09 and heard a lecture: Quantum Information Science presented by Professor J Preskill. His lecture had a number of slides showing how the three dimensions of Quantum states function. He mentioned Quantum Computers as the next step in computer science from the classical transistor based digital computers which have made such a change in the life of modern day humans. Since I have a deep interest in computer science based on my professional experience: designing Avionics systems for military aircraft which were the first to use digital computers, Teaching Computer Science as an adjunct assistant professor to graduate students, Designing and fabric...

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Logic for Programming, Artificial Intelligence, and Reasoning, LPAR 2005, held in Montego Bay, Jamaica in December 2005. The 46 revised full papers presented together with abstracts of 3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 108 full paper submissions. The papers address all current issues in logic programming, logic-based program manipulation, formal method, automated reasoning, and various kinds of AI logics.
