Am 17. Mai 1946 wurde in Potsdam-Babelsberg die DEFA als erste deutsche Filmproduktionsgesellschaft nach dem Krieg gegründet. Bis zu ihrem Ende 1992 entstanden über 700 Filme fürs Kino und rund 540 fürs Fernsehen. Darunter waren Filme, die als Kunstwerke Bestand haben werden, aber auch solche, die politisch benutzt wurden und heute eher als Zeitdokumente gelten.
