"A fun read that'll have you replaying the songs in your mind and on your stereo." -Chicago Tribune Have you ever listened to a new song and felt as if you'd heard it before? It's not your imagination. Melodies are "borrowed," consciously or subconsciously, more than you might think. For instance, do you know: That U2's "Beautiful Day" shares part of its tune with an a-ha hit from the eighties? Why Huey Lewis was so upset when he first heard Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters"? How John Lennon's classic "Imagine" bears an uncanny resemblance to a novelty record cut by his dad? Sounds Like Teen Spirit tells the fascinating true stories behind these and many other "sound-alike" songs. Showcasing w...

The Oxford History of Classical Reception (OHCREL) is designed to offer a comprehensive investigation of the numerous and diverse ways in which literary texts of the classical world have stimulated responses and refashioning by English writers. Covering the full range of English literature from the early Middle Ages to the present day, OHCREL both synthesizes existing scholarship and presents cutting-edge new research, employing an international team of expert contributors for each of the five volumes. OHCREL endeavours to interrogate, rather than inertly reiterate, conventional assumptions about literary 'periods', the processes of canon-formation, and the relations between literary and non...

Speak to Me

All of my material comes from the King James Version of the Bible, from the Oxford Bible, and from personal spiritual experiences. Open your eyes and you will see, open your ears and you will hear. He Is in Everything And Everywhere. My books are designed for the true seekers of God, the ones who want more and cant get enough of his glory and love. For our blood, sweat, and tears are crucified with him (Edwin James). My love of God has influenced me to write this book. This love has also driven me to study the scriptures and many sources of biblical information for a greater understanding of the Bible and God. For without understanding, you are lost, and words have no true meaning. But with ...

Virtuous Vice

In this daring study of queer life and the public sphere, Eric O. Clarke examines the effects of inclusion within public culture. Departing from studies that emphasize homophobia and its mechanisms of exclusion, Virtuous Vice details how mainstream efforts to represent queers affirmatively continually fall short of full democratic enfranchisement. Clarke draws on contemporary writings along with late-eighteenth- and nineteenth-century English and European cultural history to investigate how concepts of value, representation, and homoeroticism have interacted and circulated in the West since the Enlightenment. Examining the role of eroticism in citizenship and why only normalizing constructio...

England and the North

Aleksei Ziuzin's embassy to London in November 1613 added a new dimension to James I's schemes for an alliance with the Protestant kingdoms of the north. Editors Jansson, Bushkovitch, and Rogozhin have divided their study into 3 sections -- a long historical introduction, Ziuzin's account of the embassy, and appendices. The introduction analyzes England's later 16th and early 17th century relations with Denmark, Poland, the Empire, Sweden and Russia. By treating relations with Russia as integral to English foreign policy, the work challenges the usual linking of English interests with that of the Muscovy Company of English merchants. For the first time, documents heretofore inaccessible in the West are made available in English translation -- producing a valuable addition to English and Russian history. Now scholars can begin to understand Russian political objectives in conjunction with English foreign policy aims in the early 17th century. Besides appendices of correspondence, the book includes extensive notes, brief introductory essays by V.I. Buganov and N. Rogozhin, and a select bibliogaphy. Under the Direction of Victor Buganov, Institute of the History of Russia.
